Americans are drawing a line in the sand and speaking out against the Keystone XL pipeline. Our film documents the resistance movement to KXL and explains the risk this tar sands oil pipeline poses to our land and our health.
President Obama and the State Department are expected to give their decision any day now to either approve or deny TransCanada's permit request to build across the Canada-United States border. Approving the proposal will approve the transport of tar sands oil through the heartland of the United States.
This isn't OK with a vast and varied number of Americans. On February 17, about 40,000 people came to Washington, D.C. for the Forward on Climate Rally, urging the president to deny this permit. People of all ages from all across the country are standing up and speaking out against tar sands, from students and activists to landowners and scientists. We stand with them.
Advocates argue the pipeline will create more jobs and provide a better source of domestic energy. But we're worried about the pipeline's environmental and health risks. Also, some landowners, whose property has been claimed by TransCanada for construction, are suing the corporation for eminent domain abuse. Some are worried about effects to water sources on the land, while others want to protect Native grounds.
So far, we have filmed throughout Texas and Oklahoma as well as in Washington, D.C. and Kalamazoo, MI. We've met landowners who have filed lawsuits against TransCanada. We've also filmed with members of the Tar Sands Blockade, who stage direct-action protests in opposition to the pipeline. In January, we took our third trip to Texas and filmed a protest where more than 100 people stormed two TransCanada offices in Houston.
After traveling, researching, filming and witnessing protests and devastation to private land, we want to draw a line in the sand and encourage Americans to say "no" to Keystone.
