About this campaign & my efforts.
I am a primarily self-taught musician who has been lucky enough to release four albums with Chicago’s Kranky label, whose 20th anniversary is this year. These include Précis (2006), Temper (2008), Lasted (2010) and most recently, Hymnal. Some very kind people have described these records as follows:
• "Sublime atmospheric wizardry... Pioulard sings with the warmth and conviction of a true romantic." - NPR
• "Gorgeously expansive ambient folk... Pioulard is deft at creating moments of widescreen solitude." - Pitchfork
• "Dream folk with an almost effortless sway." - Other Music (NYC)
More remarks like these are catalogued at http://pioulard.com/love.htm
You can listen to lots of my songs – including ‘Margin’, the first dispatch from Hymnal – at http://soundcloud.com/pioulard or http://pioulard.com/hear.htm, and view a selection of photographs & videos at http://pioulard.com/see.htm
Because of the changing economic climate in the world of music, as well as shifts in the relationship between listeners and creators, it seemed that a campaign like this could be a viable way to raise funds in order to continue the kind of work I love doing so much, and that I hope you enjoy listening to.
I have spent most of the last sixteen months overseas, and now that I am back in the United States I am charged with the task of rebuilding a home studio and dealing with the considerable up-front costs of going on tour to support a new album.
The encouragement and support I've received from those who choose to 'vote with their wallets' over the years has been incredible and humbling, and it fills me with unending appreciation. I have always enjoyed person-to-person sales of my records and photography, as it bolsters the connection that music & art can provide between people, and it’s something that has meant a lot to me since I began ordering albums directly from artists and independent labels as a teenager.
I hope you'll see fit to help out, and I look forward to paying back the assistance with some items that I'm rather proud of and into which I've put many, many hours of work and consideration.
What I'm Asking For & What You Get
I am aiming to raise $7500, which is my best estimate for the costs of renting a car, paying for fuel and attending to the various expenses of going on tour in a country with no federal support for artists in my particular echelon. This also includes overhead for the perks of the campaign and some postage costs, which are steadily on the rise.
This figure also accounts for the acquisition of a pair of new guitar pedals and other small elements of an updated live setup that I look forward to debuting this spring, as well as for use in a new home studio in the pursuit of future recording projects. A current tour schedule is available through my site at http://pioulard.com/read.htm.
For each of my previous albums I have created a special hand-made package in an edition of 25 copies; this time the package will be available exclusively through this campaign, and is the most elaborate one I've produced to date. It is a bit more expensive as a result, but I hope it will be worth it to those who claim one; the package includes a hardcover, 60-page, full-color book of photographs taken where the album was recorded in the UK, as well as full lyrics and a foreword by the brilliant Lawrence English. It also includes a CD copy of the album housed in a handmade paper sleeve, plus a one-of-a-kind Polaroid photo from the book, an exclusive cassette of demos and outtakes, a St. Francis prayer card and more, all wrapped in 1/4" audio tape used in the production of the album. Images of this package are available at http://pioulard.com/product.htm
If the special edition is not your speed, I am also offering signed copies of the standard CD and LP, an exclusive 30-minute instrumental album called ‘Roanoke’ and a few other items that you'll see listed below. I am, of course, happy to field any and all questions you may have about these things via my email, pioulard [at] hotmail [dot] com.
My good friend and musical collaborator Rafael Anton Irisarri has an excellent diatribe on his website about the importance of paying for music and what it means for both the listener and creator; it reflects my own sentiments perfectly and I strongly encourage everyone to read it: http://irisarri.tumblr.com/store
By supporting this campaign you’re encouraging the efforts of someone who cares deeply about what he does, and who makes things based on a lifelong passion and compulsion. Even though I still have a day job most of the time by necessity, it truly means the world to me that I’ve had the chance to record and perform music for engaged audiences over the last several years, and to maintain a lifestyle that allows me to focus on this passion so readily; mere thanks would never be enough to do it justice.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you’re unable to support this campaign financially, I would greatly appreciate any other help you might be able to offer, such as:
- Posting a link on your Twitter, blog, vlog, Facebook, Myspace (?), website, Skype ‘away’ message, etc. to http://indiegogo.com/pioulard .
- Using the ‘share’ tools on this very page to tell your friends & acquaintances about this effort.
- Sending carrier pigeons and messenger mice through the air and streets of your town/city/municipality with calligraphic notes wrapped about their tiny limbs.
Thank you, merci, danke…
