From the creator, Brandon Kyle Goodman:
After graduating from Tisch School of Performing Arts at NYU, I noticed a continual lack of young artists of color and gay artists in the mainstream. Many of those who are seem to be confined to a box of outdated archetypes and stereotypes. In creating this new web series, LATRELL!, my team and I strive to challenge this by creating a platform where opinions are validated regardless of race, class, gender, or sexuality. Two years ago, while a member of the sketch-comedy group Political Subversities, I created Latrell Lavene Lebron Lucious Lacrosse Latavier Lactaid Jackson to explore this dilemma. Since then, Latrell has evolved into a larger than life character with a huge fan following. After sold-out live performances at some of New York's most popular venues from Ars Nova to Joe's Pub, Latrell is ready to cross over to internet sensation!
LATRELL! is The Daily Show meets The Wendy Williams Show. In 12 short form "webisodes", Latrell will colorfully cover current events and pop culture as well as elements of his own personal life, a la morning talk show. The webisodes will culminate in a live one-hour show in a New York City theatre where fans and viewers can see the magic that is Latrell in person!
Latrell Jackson is outrageous and over the top, but there is more to him than meets the eye. Under the leopard print leggings and body glitter there is razor sharp social satire and political comedy. Like some kind of RuPaul-Stephen Colbert love child - with a dash of Moms Mabley - Latrell always has his finger on the pulse of current events and social trends. He is funny, fierce, and better informed than most cable news pundits. From the government shutdown to Miley Cyrus, from Chris Christie to Christian Louboutin, Latrell is never afraid to tell it like it is. With no allegiances to political parties, ideologies, or even Oprah, Latrell takes on the zeitgeist with no mercy!
...is to create a web series where viewers will be informed about recent headlines from around the world as well as be entertained by rambunctious and intelligent humor, which gives a fresh, uncensored take on the news, providing the opportunity to engage in dialogue about topics and ideas that might have otherwise been ignored.
We want to produce 12 short form webisodes that will end with a season finale filmed in front of a LIVE audience! The web series will cover current events, social issues and pop culture through the lens of Latrell--a fabulous, flamboyant, nouveau riche eccentric. Through his wild behavior and quick wit, he gives a fresh, invigorating, and uncensored take on headlines, providing the opportunity for news junkies and novices alike to engage in ideas that might otherwise be missed by the media.
OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL of $24,000 will allow us to produce the twelve episodes of LATRELL! - the first season (hopefully of many!) AND a LIVE THEATRICAL EVENT to be filmed in front of a live audience!
What We Need & What You Get
Filming and editing 12 episodes of LATRELL! will involve a lot of time and people...and in turn, MONEY. We need to raise $24,000 to make this dream a reality, and here's what all that money will be going toward:
PRODUCTION & EDITING ($16,000)
This is obviously the most important part of the process. We will need to hire professional crew members and camera operators to insure that the web series:
a) looks good,
b) sounds good, andc) is innovative!
For each of the 12 episodes this will require:
Crew: Production, Camera Dept., Lighting/Grip Dept., Location Sound Mixer, Hair + Makeup, Wardrobe
Equipment: Camera Package, Lighting/Grip and Sound
Location Rental + Expenses
Post Production: Editing, Graphics, Sound Design/Mix
LIVE SHOW THEATRICAL EVENT ($5,000)
This might be the most exciting part of the entire fundraising campaign...a LIVE THEATRICAL EVENT to be filmed in front of a live audience and presented in it's entirety online as the culmination of our inaugural web series season! This will be open to the public and will give contributors and fans of the series the chance to experience Latrell up close and personal - complete with special guests, a live DJ, and the Hot Topics and LaPinions you'll know and love!
This will require:
Camera Crew + Equipment
Transportation for Equipment
...AND ALL THIS WITHOUT ANY ARTIST COMPENSATION!
COSTUMES & MAKE-UP ($2,000)
It costs a lot to look this good.
We'll need to hire a Photographer and Graphic Designer in order to complete our website, create an opening title sequence, and have high-resolution images that can be distributed both in press releases and on promotional flyers
We'll need to Advertise the web series on social media outlets such as YouTube and Facebook
We'll need to design and order Merchandise for publicizing and increasing public awareness
Latrell addresses the audience as “America” because that’s who he wants to enlighten with his special brand of informed comedy. His audience is the America that spends their Sunday nights flipping between "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" and "60 minutes". It's for the America that created Twitter and Facebook, the generation that elected the first Black President. The America that craves trendsetting fashion, visionary technology, constant entertainment, as well as a more progressive, more open and more inclusive society. And for anyone who wants to pee their pants laughing.
