The La Pellegrina Project
Texas Early Music Project (TEMP) is embarking on an extraordinary venture: the U.S. premiere performance of La Pellegrina: Music for a Medici Wedding. First performed in 1589 for the spectacular Florentine wedding of Ferdinando de Medici to Christine de Lorraine, La Pellegrina is a musical tour de force of remarkable dimensions.
The 1589 Medici wedding is not just significant as an historic event, but the “intermedi” performed between the acts of the comedic play, La Pellegrina, are considered a beginning to the art form of opera. The innovative and complex music of the intermedi was performed at the wedding in elaborate costumes on ingeniously constructed sets.
TEMP is presenting a concert version of this extravaganza, albeit without enormous sets and expensive costumes. All the same, this will be a monumental production featuring:
- A pre-concert lecture by Sara Hessel of KMFA on the historical context of this breakthrough work in the development of music as we know it today
A stellar ensemble of over fifty voices and early music instrumentalists gathered from across the country to authentically recreate the music as first heard in the Italian Renaissance
Original poetic narrative written and performed by renowned linguist Lawrence Rosenwald, Anne Pierce Rogers Professor of American Literature at Wellesley College
- A stunning finale that melodically interweaves seven separate choirs, ending effervescently with the music that took Renaissance Europe by storm for decades!
La Pellegrina: Music for a Medici Wedding will be performed twice, on September 13th and 14th, 2014, as the opening concert of TEMP’s 2014 – 2015 season. Both concerts will be recorded to produce a concert album, the first CD of all six intermedi recorded in the United States.
Our goal is to raise $15,890 (get the reference to 1589?) through this campaign towards total project costs exceeding $40,000. These funds will help to cover:
- Artist Stipends
- Artist Travel Expenses
- Space Rental
- Recording and CD Production
The production of La Pellegrina: Music for a Medici Wedding is a significant cultural event for Texas, the United States, and the early music community across the world. The September performance will generate the first American CD recording of La Pellegrina, and will be, as far as we've been able to determine, the first U.S. performance of all six intermedi (our research found no evidence of any other, but please tell us if you know otherwise!).
