Support New Voices Pittsburgh in presenting the 6th Annual
Kinks, Locks & Twists: Environmental and Reproductive Justice Conference™ 2014, March 6-9 at Carnegie Mellon University. Visit kinkslockstwists.org for all details.
The Kinks, Locks and Twists Conference™ offers women of color and allies a unique space to explore the dynamic relationship between the health and well-being of our bodies, communities and the ecosystems in both a local and global context.
KLT also serves as an incubator to share models and develop practices to solve the problems caused by living in an increasingly toxic world. In a world that devalues the voices of women and girls and the wisdom of our foremothers, this KLT Conference offers women across ethnicities, nationalities and cultures an opportunity to remember, celebrate and connect to legacies with rich relationships to the land.
We will bring together local, regional and national leaders to discuss a wide range of issues from urban farming, food security, healthy natural hair, safe cosmetics and fracking.
ABOUT KLT CONFERENCE™ 2014
Health. Beauty. Environment.
The Kinks, Locks and Twists Conference™ was created as a signature event during Women of Color HERStory Month® - a citywide celebration of women of color hosted annually between February 15 - March 15 presented by New Voices Pittsburgh. Visit womenofcolorherstory.org for the full month of events.
The goal of the KLT Conference™ during the first two years was for women of color in Pittsburgh to discuss how our pursuit of elusive standards of beauty impacted our health and well-being. The politics of Black hair specifically served as the compelling access point for women of color to enter conversations about Environmental and Reproductive Justice.
KLT has expanded to explore a broad range of important environmental issues from the high rates of asthma in some of Pittsburgh's most marginalized neighborhoods, fracking in Pennsylvania and toxic hair, makeup and personal products and their relationship to a host of reproductive cancers.
Your contributions will provide 250-300 people - primarily women and girls of color - the opportunity to explore connections between beauty, culture, policy, media, the economy and environment, behavior change and community organizing. Since 2008, the KLT Conference™ has grown from 50 people to 200+ people in attendance with capacity exceeding expectation year after year.
