Who We Are
Nature Nurtures Farm brings young people and animals together to build empathy, teach responsibility, and inspire hope.
We serve both youth and animals in need. Our nonprofit farm is a lifelong home and sanctuary to more than 100 rescued farm animals. Youth who are experiencing challenging life circumstances participate in our mentoring program, after-school program, summer camps, and volunteer opportunities caring for animals.
Young people with emotional challenges often respond to animals in ways they can’t, or won't, to fellow humans. These bonds elicit a nurturing, empathetic instinct. Learning to properly care for and understand animals develops a sense of responsibility and pride. A child whose trust was shattered by a person is far more likely to risk friendship with an animal because the animal does not ask questions, doesn't judge, and never shares his or her secrets. Animals then help to bridge communication with caring adults, forming emotional skills that lead to healthy relationships.
Why We Need You
We are committed to continuing to serve the youth and animals who need us, but we can't do it without your help. To abide by strict county regulations, we recently learned that we will need to acquire a "special use permit" -- and to get that permit we will have to complete some costly upgrades to our facility. What little revenue we generate through annual summer camps keeps our youth mentoring program afloat; without the permit, we'll no longer be able to offer these camps. So we're in a pretty tough spot.
If we can't afford to complete the upgrades required by the county, we are faced with the unthinkable prospect of having to walk away from our life's work.
What We Need
We need a total of approximately $29,000, broken down as follows:
- $7,700: "Special use permit" fee
- $990: Pre-submission conference
- $4,020: SEPA State Environmental Review
- $5,000-$7,000: Cost to drill a new well. (We're really hoping they don't have to go terribly deep! This cost could go up considerably if they have to drill a lot deeper than is typical for our area.)
- $4,000: Engineering services for public water system, parking, and site drainage
- $3,000: Septic design services
- $2,600: Indiegogo and Paypal fees, perk fulfillment
Any and all funds raised will go toward the costs detailed above. If we don't meet our fundraising goal, we'll have no choice but to pull funds from our day-to-day operating budget, which will mean cutting skilled, caring staff members and perhaps ceasing our youth mentoring program -- the lifeblood of what we do -- entirely.
If we surpass our goal, we'll use any additional funds to expand our mentoring and after-school programs to serve more youth in need.
Nature Nurtures Farm, the life's vision of Nicole Peters, was founded and incorporated in April 2012. Modeled after the successful Green Chimneys program in New York, Nature Nurtures Farm offers a diverse array of programs designed to bring children and animals together for educational and emotionally beneficial experiences.
During summer of 2013, Nature Nurtures Farm welcomed a total of 197 children for farm and horse day camps, run primarily by volunteers. We have nearly three dozen young people enrolled in our mentoring program who struggle with social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties.
The programs offered at Nature Nurtures Farm promote and strengthen children's emotional health and family relationships. Nature Nurtures Farm is dedicated to providing educational, therapeutic, and recreational services to youth and families in a safe and peaceful environment that fosters dignity, compassion, and respect for all living things. Most programs offer extensive opportunities for participants to interact with the farm's many rescued animals.
Your donation will help ensure that we can continue to serve the young people who count on us and the animals we care for.
