Note that contributions to the Kiva Fellow(s) on Indiegogo are not donations to Kiva and consequently, Kiva is not able to issue a tax receipt for these donations.

Short Summary

I have been a teacher in New York City schools for the past five years.  I have taught in communities across the city: South Bronx, Crown Heights, East New York, and Sunset Park.  Although these neighborhoods vary in demographic and location, one fact remains true in each, most students are not on grade level, significantly lagging behind their peers in more affluent communities.  I've witnessed first hand how a dysfunctional school system couples with poverty in communities to impede student growth and achievement.  I'm interested in stepping outside of the classroom, the city, and the country in order to broaden my perspective, and understand poverty and poverty alleviation tools in a global context.

What is Kiva?  What is a Kiva Fellow?

Kiva is a microlending platform that connects lenders with borrowers who do not have access to traditional banking.  Kiva channels its capitol into microfinance instutitions around the world.  Microfinance is defined as financial services to the poor.

The Kiva Fellows program is a volunteer, unpaid position helping to administer microfinance loans in one of the countries that Kiva works in. As a Fellow, I will be working with two non-traditional Kiva partnerships in Nairobi, Kenya.  The first is Strathmore University, where I will market partial and full tuition loans to students in low-income communities.  The second is Kiva Zip, a new initiative that connects lenders and borrowers directly, without the participation of third party microfinance institutions.

As a fellow I'll be be acting as Kiva's eyes and ears on the ground and expanding Kiva's impact.

What We Need & What You Get

Being a Kiva Fellow is a wonderful opportunity, but the fact remains that it must be fully self-funded and is fairly expensive.  I can use any help you can offer to help me pay for things like:

-airfare from Kenya

-housing in Nairobi

-transportation around the region to visit borrowers

Other Ways You Can Help

If you aren't able to support my campaign, don't worry! You can help out in other ways:

-sharing this with others who might be able to donate

- Signing up on Kiva and lending to a borrower
