Kaima - Organic Farm for Youth-at-Risk

What is the need and how can it be creatively addressed?

In today's world, teens often find it difficult to relate to conventional social values; consequently, they withdraw from society, drop out of school and slip into isolation.

At Kaima Organic Farm, we have created an innovative solution to this problem by creating a unique outdoor space where drop-out teens will gain employability skills, work experience, leadership development and community building skills and enjoy the benefits of teamwork. The teens will see themselves as fully invested partners in this undertaking, as they will receive a salary for working on the farm.

What is Kaima?

Kaima, (sustainability in Aramaic), is a newly established Israeli NGO that will re-engage, motivate and empower drop-out, at-risk youth who cannot adjust to, let alone thrive in, other social settings. Teens on our program will gain agricultural and leadership skills, learn communication and marketing, basic business knowledge, fiscal and personal accountability, and environmental responsibility. They will learn how to achieve environmental sustainability by growing their own food, collecting rainwater and restoring diminished landscapes and ecosystems.

Where is Kaima?

The project is on 12 dunams (3 acres) of fertile land in the village of Moshav Beit Zayit - donated by generous local families.

Who are our partners?

In collaboration with other NGO's and government authorities, we are committed to transforming the lives of a distressing number of youth who have exceptional difficulty finding their place in the world and are living on the margins of society.

Who is eligible?

Youth-at-risk (as identified by the Ministry of Education) who have either fallen out of the system or are receiving minimal formal instruction. Candidates will undergo a competitive interview process to be selected for inclusion in this project.

What's the plan?

The first crops will be planted by Kaima's board, members of the community and other volunteers. Once up and running, activities will take place daily in shifts from 8:00 - 4:00.

What does our pedagogic model have the power to do?

  • Legitimize non-conventional educational settings.
  • Encourage young people to engage in positive interaction with adults and their peers.
  • Provide on-the-job training and life skills for marginalized youth
  • Give urban youth the opportunity to engage with nature.

The Kaima Organic Farm offers a real chance to contribute to a society in which a growing number of kids feel no sense of personal pride or civic responsibility. This grassroots initiative has the ambition and and potential to become a model for replication in other communities.
