jv16 PowerTools as Open Source
jv16 PowerTools is one of the most popular Windows utility software suites. It has a history tracing back to the late 1990′s and millions of downloads under its belt.
Macecraft Software, the company behind the software, carried out a user survey in May and June of 2013 and over 87% of the jv16 PowerTools’ users rated it good, giving it a full 5 points rating! We also asked about going open source, and the majority of people who answered the survey agreed that it would be a good idea and said that they would be willing to participate financially to make it possible.
So, here we are!
What is Open Source Software?
Open source software means that the software is free to use, for personal and commercial use. In addition, the source code – the blueprint of how the software is built – is also made public and for everyone to see.
You do not have to be a developer or coder in order to use open source software or to benefit from it. In fact, you are using open source software right now. If you are using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to read this page, you are using open source. Or if you are using some other web browser, don't worry, this website like majority of all websites, run with open source software such as the Apache web server and the PHP programming language.
As an end user, if jv16 PowerTools goes open software, nothing changes for the users. Nothing except that the program would become free for everyone to use! Further, it would become a whole lot more powerful with new features, different editions and faster bug fixes. Open source would allow the best parts of the program to be used in other software as well!
The Past and Present
Going as far back as 1998, Jouni Flemming (at that time Jouni Vuorio), published the freeware Windows registry cleaning software called RegCleaner. Even without anything of the likes of Facebook or even Google, RegCleaner quickly became popular and it registered over 100,000 unique downloads within only few months of its initial version release.
In 2001 the development started for a more complete Windows utility suite with all the functions of the original RegCleaner included. This program became known as “jv16 PowerTools”. The name originates from the author’s initials, and 16 was his age at the time the development of RegCleaner really took off. The jv16 PowerTools project also started as a freeware.
Macecraft Software (Macecraft Inc.) was officially established in 2003 when jv16 PowerTools was converted to shareware. The conversion to shareware caused objections in the freeware oriented jv16 PowerTools and RegCleaner user community even with all the users who helped in the first development phases received free personal licenses for the program.
Today, our goal is to make the best Windows registry cleaner and utility software possible, and we believe the best way to achieve this objective is with the cumulative power of developers around the world. This is one of the reasons why we want to sell jv16 PowerTools to the people who use it and to people that will take it further on its natural development cycle.
jv16 PowerTools PC Utility Suite Features
jv16 PowerTools is an epic Windows utility suite and registry cleaner. The analogy is similar to requiring oil and regular maintenance to keep a car engine running, you will need jv16 PowerTools to keep Windows running.
These are the main features in jv16 PowerTools:
The program also contains the following tools:
All parts of the program’s user interface can be localized by editing a simple translation file. At the moment jv16 PowerTools comes with the following translations, made by the user community:
Registry Cleaner Benchmark Study
Before Macecraft released the latest version of the product, jv16 PowerTools 2014, a ground breaking benchmark test was carried out comparing the overall PC performance before and after using jv16 PowerTools and a widely used competitive product: CCleaner.
In the past, Macecraft has published four similar comparison studies addressing to the questions about the quality of different registry cleaning products. The latest study, however, was completely different. This time the focus was purely on performance – are registry cleaners worth using or not? The purpose of this test was not to undermine any products or to state that one product is better than another. Instead, the goal was to provide the best possible data to users and to allow them to make their own conclusions.

Quality Test Results: Windows Startup Benchmark
The startup times are found below.
|Case||Startup time 1||Startup time 2||Startup time 3||Average startup time|
|Freshly installed Windows||51 sec.||52 sec.||48 sec.||50 sec.|
|Windows with dirty registry||90 sec.||102 sec.||108 sec.||100 sec.|
|Cleaned with jv16 PT 2014||46 sec.||44 sec.||51 sec.||47 sec.|
|Cleaned with CCleaner||98 sec.||86 sec.||87 sec.||90 sec.|
Two things can be clearly seen from the above table. Firstly, a very unclean registry will have a significant impact on Windows startup times. Secondly, cleaning the unclean registry with jv16 PowerTools 2014′s Clean and Fix My Computer feature made the average startup time drop from 100 seconds to just 47 seconds.
Note: If you wish to verify these numbers and the test results, you can download desktop screen capture videos of the actual testing process from here: Screencaps.7z.
Quality Test Results: PCMark 7 Benchmark
The results of the benchmarks can be seen below.
|Freshly installed Windows||1383||link|
|Windows with dirty registry||1166||link|
|Cleaned with jv16 PT 2014||1472||link|
|Cleaned with CCleaner||1415||link|
The results as seen above show that a Windows registry with a lot of errors does have an effect on general system benchmark scores and cleaning the registry with a registry cleaning software provides improvement to benchmark scores.
There are two main conclusions that can be made, based on this test:
A Windows registry with a lot of errors and unneeded data does have a measurable negative effect on general system performance,
A high quality registry cleaner software, especially jv16 PowerTools 2014, is able to improve general system performance.
Open source comes in many flavors, such as: Awesome and Epic
The two main options of converting jv16 PowerTools to open source are the GPL and BSD models.
As GPL open source, the program’s source code is released and the program can be used for free by everyone. However, if you wish to use the program’s source code in other software, or even if you want to create new software using jv16 PowerTools’ source code, the new product must also be released as GPL open source. This means that commercial products couldn't use jv16 PowerTools’ source code.
In the BSD model the source code is also released and the program can be used for free by everyone. However, with the BSD model the source code is released “as is” and it can be used by anyone with any project. For example, our competitors could take the best parts of the program and use it in their products (without having to release the product’s source code, like in the GPL model) to the benefit of users who have not even heard of us and jv16 PowerTools.
Depending on the impact and level of our cumulative social and funding efforts, jv16 PowerTools will be released as either GPL or BSD. Its all up to you!
Why is this campaign good for you?
This is an amazing opportunity for you. As you can see from the table below, no matter what is your relationship with Macecraft Software and the jv16 PowerTools software, it is ultimately you who is going to benefit if and when the product goes open source:
|You||Benefit for you if jv16 PowerTools goes open source|
|Trial version user of jv16 PowerTools||You could use the full version of the program without having to pay for it. You could forget the trial version’s trial limit and use the program for free, forever!|
|Customer||You could continue to use the program and you will not have to pay for any upgrade fees ever. You would also benefit from faster and higher quality improvements from the development community. New features, custom versions, faster bug fixes and improvements - you wil get all this for free, forever!|
|Customer with VIP||Same benefits as above, but in addition you are entitled for technical support provided by Macecraft Software.|
|Customer with Platinum VIP package||Same benefits as above, but in addition you are entitled to make priority feature requests to the development community and Macecraft Software and you can get the changes and improvements you want included to the product.|
|User of competitive program||If you are using a competitive product, the company or author developing the program could use the technology and components of jv16 PowerTools to make the program you use better.|
|Pirated version user||You would get the original version from the original source and you would always get to use the very latest version without having to search third party sites for updates. If you are using a pirated version, you are risking getting viruses or other nasty surprises since you need to download the program from unofficial sources. As open source, you would know exactly what kind of software you are running.|
|Someone who doesn't even know what jv16 PowerTools is||If we would convert jv16 PowerTools to open source software, it would give developers from all around the world an amazing new set free components and tools to use with their software. This has the potential of improving many software you are currently using, or even software you will be using in the future.|
As you can see from the table, no matter how you look at this, you will win if jv16 PowerTools goes open source. This is truly a win-win situation for all!

Frequently Asked Questions
Below you can find some of the most frequently asked questions that the jv16 PowerTools global community has been asking related to this campaign.
Why do you want $100 000 USD?
Macecraft has put thousands of hours of work into the product. Basically, it is our pride and joy. We cannot just give it away for free. Usually when a company or a product is sold, the price is determined by the gross sales per year, multiplied with a factor of 2-4. If the same formula would be used here, we would be asking a lot more, since the product is generating more than $100 000 USD in sales per year.
The reason why we put the target price this low is because we really and honestly wish only the very best for the product and its user community and this is why we rather sell the product to the user community and get less money, than make more money by selling it to our competitors, for example.
What happens if the campaign goal is not reached?
If the desired funding is not reached, all pledge levels will receive their digital rewards (no physical items) as well as a number of jv16 PowerTools 2014 licenses that matches its contribution level. On top of this, everyone (except Open Source FAN pledge level) will receive paid technical support time matching their respective contribution level.
What happens if and when the campaign goal is reached?
If and when we reach the target price of $100 000 USD for releasing the software as GPL, the campaign will still continue until the pre-defined deadline. If we go over the target price, we will release the software as open source with more permissible license, such as BSD style license. The higher the price goes, the more permissible license will be applied. Also, the higher we go, the faster source code will be released after the campaign, as we would have more resources to prepare it for the open source community.
After the campaign goal is reached, when will the source code be released?
We will need some time to prepare the source code to be published. For example, some oldest parts of the code still use non-English comments and variable names, these need to be translated to English. We would also remove all the code relating to the trial system and licensing scheme, as it would no longer be relevant after the software becomes free. We would also perform a full maintenance and improvement round for the entire code base, to make it as clear as possible for the larger development audience.
What programming language is used to develop jv16 PowerTools?
jv16 PowerTools has been developed using Delphi. The main source base consists of about 330.000 lines of source code. On top of the core registry cleaner engine and the other main features, the program contains a myriad of useful components that would be beneficial for various other software.
For example, the graphical list component alone, which is used to display the results of each tools in PowerTools, would be extremely valuable for the Delphi programming community as anything like it does not exist as open source. Another component to mention is the graphical tab control that supports smooth animation, PNG graphics and many other features not currently available in any component (commercial or free) for Delphi.
