One of the country’s most important sporting and community-inspired artworks is heading toward the finish line in Boulder, Colorado. With the first round of funding complete, including significant contributions from Alcoa and MillerCoors, the U.S. Cycling Monument is on target for a July 2014 fundraising deadline.

To date, six major donors, in-kind support from 40 businesses, and the donation of 100 inscribed cobblestones have given the project great momentum. Now in Phase II the public at large, and all corporate supporters are able through this final campaign to raise the remaining $150,000 that will enable construction to start.

“Years of prep and approvals with the City, Parks and Recreation, and Arts Commissions are done,” said monument advisory board member and design phase consultant Michael Aisner. “We have heard much from people around the world who have been touched in some way by these great races that they too wanted to participate, have their names on cobbles and stones and donate. This last push will be able to assuredly sew this up by July.”

Commemorates the Birthplace of International Pro Cycling in the US

In association with the Boulder Parks and City representative, PLAY Boulder Foundation, designed by Colorado artist Kimmerjae Johnson, the monument will be the focal point of North Boulder Park, the historic heart of modern U.S. cycling. This is where, in 1975, entrepreneur Mo Siegel founded the Red Zinger Classic, an event that morphed into the 16-day Coors International Bicycle Classic, which race promoter Aisner expanded into one of the four biggest stage races in the world.  Covering four states, starting in San Francisco  it garnered CBS/NBC/ESPN coverage, a Warner Bros film and sold $1.5 million in race merchandise in five countries and every year it ended right where the monument will be situated.  It helped put Boulder on the map, attracting countless athletes and bike/sports industry businesses, and as America's "healthiest and thinnest cities," helped fulfill Siegel’s dream of a city dedicated to healthy physical activity through cycling.

With a profile changing dynamically as one moves through and around the sculpture, its elegant 50-foot-long, spiraling beam of aluminum will convey the excitement of a bike race’s breakaways, chases and sprints.

Like a silver ribbon, the beam will sail above the cobblestone plaza, between a canted stone archway ('Winner’s Circle') and a massive standing stone ('Talking Stone'). On this element will be written the history of the Red Zinger and Coors Classics, commemorating all the winners, along with their successors in today’s USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

On the north border of the plaza, a sweeping arc of substantial buff sandstone block creates a seat wall for visitors to rest and view the monument and the park. Plantings in a raised bed supported by this wall will blow in the wind, like fans waving on the racers.

To complete funding, the project requires more sponsors, along with individual donations for inscribed blocks, cobblestones, and the many "perks" listed here.
