Our names are Taylor and Lauren Lench. We’re filmmakers.
Over the past 7 years, we’ve had the opportunity to cover many difficult subjects. We’ve talked to parents who have lost their children, families battling illnesses, and young athletes who have suffered catastrophic head injuries.
Now we’re turning our lenses to a problem that is quietly devastating people our age. We’ve all heard the figures on unemployment. We’ve heard solutions, and we’ve seen the finger pointing.
We’re making Jobless Anonymous to explore what young, educated people do with their time when they’ve never gained meaningful, full-time employment. We want to know more about their talents, their routines, their emotions, and the ways they cope. We will conceal the identities of our subjects.
With your help, we can share the stories of 5 extraordinary, unemployed young Americans.
Here's the good news: we're already a production company! We already own (and more importantly, know how to use) all the equipment necessary to make Jobless Anonymous. This means your donation won't go to a rental house or retailer. The $8,000 budget entirely accounts for production and promotion. The majority of our expenses will go towards travel and an office in which to make the film.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of where the money will go:
OFFICE EXPENSES: We'll need at least 2 months in pre- and post-production in our home office to make Jobless Anonymous. This estimate is based on our track record of working 12 hour days, every day, on projects we're passionate about. Because we are temporarily giving up commercial production work in favor of producing Jobless Anonymous, we simply need to cover our rent, electric, and internet costs.
PRODUCTION TRAVEL: We will be filming interviews across the United States for Jobless Anonymous. The portion dedicated to Production Travel will cover gasoline, maintenance of our Honda Element, lodging, and a meager food allowance.
INTERVIEWEES: The people we'll be filming are taking time away from their job search efforts to be in the film. We're going to pay them $50 per day for participating.
WEB SITE DESIGN & HOSTING: We need a professionally-designed web site to help get the message out in the classiest way possible. In addition to making a film, we will also provide an online resource for unemployed people to connect. This portion of the budget covers the costs to hire a web designer, register the domain name, and have joblessanonymous.com hosted.
REWARD FULFILLMENT: We're keeping expenses at a minimum by avoiding most physical rewards, such as t-shirts, DVDs, and pens. (Do you really need another lanyard or bottle opener?) We acknowledge that as donors, the point is not to get prizes, but to get involved, communicate with us, and help ensure that Jobless Anonymous becomes a reality.
CONTINGENCY: What happens if our beloved Honda Element needs a new tire when we're on our way to to a shooting location? What if our $30 room falls through and we have to pay real hotel prices? Experience has taught us that you can't plan for insanity. Without a contingency budget, production comes to a halt. A small contingency is our insurance against emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
We've crunched the numbers, cut out all the fat, and tightened our belts in every way to make Jobless Anonymous a feasible project.
If we raise MORE than $8,000, we'll be able to travel farther, follow our subjects longer, have more time to craft the film, and edit on the road with a laptop. We may even be able to enter Jobless Anonymous into some film festivals.
If we raise LESS than $8,000, we'll have to limit our scope and locations, and the production schedule will be tightened accordingly.
When we hear about "The Unemployment Crisis," it's mainly in the form of statistics, numbers, and often, who's to blame. Quietly, young graduates are suffering. They may be still living at home, waiting to get out on their own, burdened by debt and lack of purpose.
Jobless Anonymous will offer them a chance to speak.
