Jacqueries Is An iPhone App-Based Live Performance, & It's Going To Be Awesome
Jacqueries is a really different kind of show. Inspired by promenade theatre and parkour's co-opting of urban space, we're telling a political heist story through movement using a custom iPhone app. Performers lead the audience through scenes in urban locations, accompanied by a synchronized score and 3D video overlays delivered via iPhone.
The title comes from a failed peasant uprising in medieval France, which became a French term for any unsuccessful insurrection by the lower classes. As one of my dancers said, "The French are stubborn, they just kept trying until eventually they made a revolution."
Jacqueries is led by me: Jacob Niedzwiecki. I started dancing at age 5 and programming at age 7 and started working professionally in both worlds not long after. I've made a number of live works, and a few short films. I'm lucky to be working with the amazing John Gzowski, who is designing the score and the sound world that we want to bring our audience into.
The show features Catherine Larocque, Luke Garwood, Anisa Tejpar, Anastasia Shivrina, and Mateo Galindo Torres, and guest performances by some of Toronto's best parkour traceurs and street dancers. We've been supported by the Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council, but we need your help to realize the full potential of this show.
With your help, we're going to launch the world's first app-based dance show.
This Campaign = Front Row Seats
We want to keep our base ticket price cheap at $20 (not to get mushy, but we think art should be available to everyone), so we decided to treat this as our 'front-row seat' sale, offering tickets plus cool extras for prices that (for a lot of people) are not out of reach. So any donation of $35 or over includes show tickets as indicated, plus cool stuff like:
- Augmented reality thank-you cards
- Classic one-inch pins
- Rehearsal invitations
- Custom phone cases with images from the show
- iPod touches signed by the cast
We've also got a couple of rewards that don't include tickets for out-of-towners or people who want to contribute but can't make it to a show.
