This campaign is raising funds on behalf of Ella Baker Center For Human Rights In California, a verified nonprofit. The campaign does not necessarily reflect the views of the nonprofit or have any formal association with it. All contributions are considered unrestricted gifts and can't be specified for any particular purpose.

On March 23rd, I hope to be doing two things:  (#1) running my first ever half marathon at the Oakland Running Festival with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and  (#2)  representing Horizon’s Young Professionals for Equality, at the SF LGBT Community Center’s 11th year anniversary celebration – Studio 11.  I am writing to ask for your support and encouragement as I train to cross the finish line and raise 1,000 dollars for three organizations that matter to me along the way.

My pledge to raise funds:

In the last year, my physical and spiritual health moved from bottom of the metaphorical to-do list check marks to present and meaningful positions in my day to day life.  The city that I love so dearly taught me the joy of slow long runs in golden gate park, or up and down Mt. Tam, or through Portreo hill while my Bay Area community reminded me of the joys and nourishment activism provides.  In celebration of my rediscovered philanthropic and physical interests, I am running my first half marathon to raise 400 dollars for the Ella Baker Center, 400 dollars for the SF LGBT Community Center, and 200 dollars for Horizon’s Young Professionals for Equality.  If you join me, I’ve arranged a variety of thank you goodies that I shall send you upon completion of my goals! Take a peek at them on the right hand side, and read on.

Why I’m committed to these organizations (aka community-based work at its best):

1.   The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights

The Ella Baker Center advocates for our youth, families, and workers by focusing their pursuits on laws that alleviate the unfair burden the prison system places on low-income families and families of color.  In 2012, the Ella Baker Center was instrumental in crucial legislation protecting youth trapped in a corrupt system—including getting rid of illegal time adds for incarcerated youth, and forcing the state to finally guarantee an end to the California youth authority.   My work in the criminal justice field has underlined just how vital the Ella Baker Center’s work is in confronting racism, poverty, and our country’s high recidivism rate.  The 400 dollars we raise will go to the Ella Baker Center to help them conduct their vital operations.

2.  The San Franciso LGBT Community Center

The San Francisco LGBT Community Center connects diverse communities to opportunities, resources, and one another to achieve a healthier and more equitable world for LGBT people and their allies.  In addition to providing physical space for LGBT community organizations to deliver over 200 programs a year, the Center also provides direct services that address health and wellness, economic development, the needs of youth and families, vitality in the arts, and civic engagement/activism.  The 400 dollars we raise will go to underwriting the cost of their annual event, Soiree 11, so all of the donations they raise that evening can go directly to support the Center’s vital services.

3.  Horizon's Young Professionals for Equality (HYPE)

An initiative of the Horizons Foundation and HYPE's founding members, the Horizons Young Professionals for Equality program was developed to enable participants to pool smaller contributions in support of the LGBT community, to network with other community-minded individuals, and to learn and grow into their roles as future leaders in the community.  In short, HYPE is a vehicle for young donors to flex their collective philanthropic muscles. (Also, are you interested in becoming a HYPE member? Please hit me up! We want you.)  The 200 dollars we raise will go to the 2013 HYPE grant fund.

Thank you so much friends, family, allies in action, glitter queens, besties, rockstars, femmes, and strangers for your help and kindness.
