Iron Rivals: Fantasy-themed strategy game powered by football statistics

Iron Rivals is a fantasy-themed strategy game featuring legendary heroes and combat powered by real-time football statistics.

Introducing the Next Evolution in Fantasy + Football

Iron Rivals Logo

Iron Rivals is a fantasy-themed strategy game where players fight over territory using legendary heroes who clash in head-to-head combat. The outcomes of the battles are determined by football statistics, streamed in real-time as professional football games unfold.

What makes Iron Rivals special?

  • Iconic heroes with unique backstories, rendered in our gritty, fantasy art style
  • Interactive game map where players strategically launch attacks, defense and manage their empire; the player with the most territory at the end of the football season wins!
  • Matchups happen between heroes, not between teams as in other fantasy sports; heroes are deployed alone or in combination, creating new and dramatic combat scenarios every week
  • Integration with live statistics; watch battles between heroes unfold as the football game stats are generated
  • Extensive list of alternate rules and game options (see Roadmap) to enhance the strategy gameplay and give league administrators total control

Why do we need your support?

Iron Rivals has a very well-defined deadline. It needs to be stable, fast, fun and ready to play by the start of fantasy football drafts in August and the first kickoff in early September.

Having the game ready means greatly increasing artwork production and development over the next three months.

Most of the money will go to pay concept artists to create heroes, developers to create the game and fantasy football features, and to pay for support services (like accurate, live statistics) that are required to make Iron Rivals everything that we want it to be.

Your support is essential to ensure that Iron Rivals is ready for Fall 2013.

"I want to contribute, but what if you don't reach your funding goal?"

We've chosen a "fixed funding" campaign, which means that we do not receive any contributions unless we reach our goal. When you contribute, IndieGoGo collects he money immediately, but will refund the funds if the project does not reach its target.

This ensures that supporters can feel confident about contributing, with no risk of losing money to a project that does not come to fruition.

Every draftable player in professional football will have a hero alter-ego. Popular heroes will have custom portraits (contributors vote on which players receive custom artwork), while other heroes will draw from a pool of hero portraits. The more money we raise, the more custom portraits we can create.

Over time we aim to have custom artwork for most players in professional football.

Overview of Gameplay

Iron Rivals will have a rhythm very familiar to fantasy football veterans. Players create leagues and invite friends or colleagues in order to compete against each other.

Heroes are drafted using common fantasy football draft mechanics, or hero rosters can be manually set up by the league admin (if you want to import draft selections from another fantasy football site).

Strategic actions are submitted on the days between professional football games, usually Tuesday and Wednesday. Heroes can be deployed alone or in combination to attack and defend territories.

After Wednesday, matchups between heroes are finalized and ready for resolution during the football games, which can run from Thursday through Monday evening. Statistics from the live games are streamed to the site in real time so you can watch the combat unfold as the football players (and their associated heroes) perform on the field.

Concept Game Map

Game map concept

After a week's games are complete, winners are declared, territories change hands and the war continues.

The game will run for the entirety of the regular season (17 weeks) and a winner - the player who owns the most territory - will be declared after the last games are played.

Thoughtful deployment of your heroes, combined with tactful manipulation of your opponents (alliances are encouraged!), will set you up for victory. That said, there are always surprises on the football field, and those amazing feats (and fumbles) will have big effects on the outcomes of battles.

Questions & Answers

Who are you?

The Iron Rivals team is a humble gathering of Chicago-based designers, artists and developers wielding decades of software experience. We're locked, loaded and excited to build Iron Rivals for you and your friends.

You're asking for a lot of money. Why do you need so much?

Iron Rivals has a very well-defined deadline. It needs to be stable, fast, fun and ready to play by the start of fantasy football drafts in August and the first kickoff in early September.

Having the game ready means greatly increasing artwork production and development over the next three months.

Most of the money will go to pay concept artists to create heroes, developers to create the game and fantasy football features, and to pay for support services (like accurate, live statistics) that are required to make Iron Rivals reliable, fast and fun.

If I contribute and you don't reach your funding goal, do I lose my contribution?

No. We're using a fixed funding campaign, which means that we do not receive any of the contributions unless we reach our goal. IndieGoGo charges you when you contribute and will refund the money if the project does not reach its goal.

Will the game be free?

Creating basic leagues will be 100% free. The site will feature advertising, but players have the option of removing ads for a small one-time, per-season fee. Additional features may include additional fees, but our goal is to keep the game as open and low-cost as possible.

Did you know that Brian Urlacher no longer plays for the Bears?

We do! The news came after we created Ur-Lak, but we don't mind the change. The bear pelt on his back now serves as an symbol of revenge which, if you ask us, is more interesting anyway.

Players changing teams is a reality of professional sports and we'll continue to create and update our hero artwork with this in mind.

I noticed defensive players among the heroes. Will you support both individual defensive players (IDP) and team defense?

We have plans to support both IDP and team defense options, but will likely pursue the individual defensive player model first as it fits more closely with the hero-centric focus of Iron Rivals' gameplay. We also have plans to accommodate more defensive positions, such as punters.

Aren't you appealing to two very different types of people?

Our research, combined with our own interests, has shown that there are a lot of people out there who enjoy fantasy-themed movies, video games and TV shows who also enjoy a good football game.

The days of jocks vs. D&D nerds are long gone. Now everyone is free to pursue all of their interests regardless of how different they may be. Plus, we like the idea that we're bridging two different spaces in a way that may create both new football fans and new fans of the fantasy genre.

Some of the heroes look a lot like their player counterparts. Are you worried about running into legal issues?

Our heroes are definitely creative works of fiction, but we absolutely respect each player's right of publicity and power to control how his likeness is used.

Our intention is to nurture fandom, both of football and of the hard-working players in its ranks. We expect to tweak and adjust the artwork as needed to do right by both the fans and the professional football players.
