The JyARz Story
My name is Aldo Castaneda and I started JyARz about a year ago, when a friend of mine saw me using a portable Advil container. He said, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if that were made entirely out of glass?" I was instantly captivated by that idea.
A Unique, Patent Pending Eco-Friendly Design
After thinking through a variety of designs in my head, I applied for a US Patent for my final design, which based on recent communications with the US PTO, appears will be granted.
The prototype (see video above) is complete and the final design is a perfect working model of my design. I am currently working with Kennerly-Spratling, an injecting molding and production firm in San Leandro, California. KS is overseeing production of a steel injection mold used to produce the shell that seals and protects the glass core of a JyAR. The first shipment of 5,500 glass "cores" with the JyARz logo emblazened on them has arrived, at the warehouse (more "house" than "ware"). And we expect to start shipping JyARz to supporters and customers this Fall (2012).
Why Crowd Funding?
I launched this IndieGoGO campaign to help pay for the first run production and other bills that have accumulated since I got started with JyARz. Most of the costs are related to design/production related to the injection molding process.
JyARZ - Environmental Mission
The name JyARz (the "why" is silent) is a play on Gyres. Gyres are swirling ocean currents in which a growing volume of plastic is disintegrating and being incorporated into the marine foodchain. Part of our mission at JyARz is to promote awareness of this growing environmental problem. So when people ask about the our name, we talk about Gyres and plastic waste.
JyARz are also inherently environmentally friendly. JyARz are made from recycled milk jugs, like the ones you buy at your local super market. The gaskets in a JyAR are made from natural latex rubber. The glass "core" in a JyAR can be easily removed for cleaning and reuse and it can be recycled and replaced which means you can keep on using your JyAR again and again and again.
Last, 1% of JyARz sales (once JyARz are in full production) will be donated to 1% for the Planet. Those funds will be directed to organizations researching the impact of the growing volume of plastic that is swirling around and disintegrating in swirling oceans currents called Gyres.
