Have you ever needed information so important it could save your life? Information that you knew was there but was just out of your grasp? I know I have.
In the world we live in today we are recording everything we do and yet we don't have easy access to this data or the insights it might provide. If large advertising companies, grocery stores, university research scientists, politicians have access to models that represent us why don't we? During my search for answers I discovered it was because no one has built it yet. Until Now
When my youngest daughter was a few weeks old my wife and I noticed that something was wrong, our daughter wasn't gaining weight and appeared to be in pain constantly. We read and researched, studied and connected with other families, talked to our friends and doctors. We ended up with a bunch of guesses and no answers. But we did have a supportive community to help us try new things and vet suggestions. Eventually my wife and I started to notice a pattern. Our daughter would suffer the most close to feedings. This was fantastic we finally were able to find a pattern. What we needed now was a way for mom to stay nourished, eating enough calories to provide for mom and baby while at the same time discover the offending foods. InciteYourself was born out of a need that I had that I could not find. We needed a way to record what food mom ate when while also recording what reactions baby had at what times of what severity so I could ask a few simple questions, what are the top 10 ingredients eaten 4, 6, 8, or 10 hours prior to the most sever reactions in baby.
What took weeks of trial and error could have been discovered with a few days of recording. We eventually discovered that even the slightest amount of dairy was causing major discomfort to this baby we loved so much.
The more I thought of the engine I wanted to build the more I thought of information about myself that would prove valuable.
What we are building
InciteYourself is a pattern finding prediction and query engine using the same big data resources available to large corporations but specific to YOU. Empowering you to make informed decisions, discover your habits so you can break them and help incite the change we desire through insight into ourselves.
InciteYourself is an online web application and mobile platform that ties together the plethora of metadata we generate about ourselves through questions you ask. Some answers are predictions, some might be charts, some might be a distinct NO, while others might be a reminder or encouragement. But each answer will be distinctly yours, calculated against your fitbit data or your withings scale, your web browsing habits or the weather.
Using arbitrary data sources you can learn some very exciting things about yourself. Some questions you might ask are:
- What day should I take my test?
- What was the weather like on the day I walked the farthest?
- What sites have I looked at on rainy days in the afternoon?
- What are the five most common things I eat prior to an abnormal glucose test?
- Here is an example of some potential alerts.
- Let me know if I've had more than five days in a row with less than five hours of sleep.
- Let me know every time I beat my previous step record.
- Let me sleep 45 minutes longer on days it's raining.
How we do it
By leveraging the vast data stores we collect about ourselves combined with cutting edge big data visualization techniques you can get information you understand.
Hardware sensors and Apis we will support out of the gate:
- Body media
- Health graph
- Emotive EEG
- National weather prediction
- Google Predict
- Geo location Apis
- National Census
What We Need & What You Get
We are seeking funding to help grow the application quickly and to get the word out. Essentially we need you, we need to know what information is important to you, what would you have liked to know sooner, what might have been prevented if it were caught earlier.
Most of the funding will go to pay hosting and CPU cost, software licenses to bring the richest user experience we can provide and to hire top notch talent to help with the building of this exciting platform.
Other Ways You Can Help
I understand that not everyone has the means to contribute financially. But that doesn't mean we don't need you! In order to make the most diverse questions we need to hear from you, what questions would you add? What data would you like to add? Follow is on Facebook or Twitter and start the discussion about what would incite you using the hashtag #InciteYourself
