In Verbis Virtus is a first person video game that mixes action and puzzle elements in a fantasy setting.
You play as a wizard who can cast spells pronouncing magic formulas. The innovation of this game resides in the control system: the player must use a microphone to perform spells by actually saying the magic words. In fact the title could be translated from Latin as "Power is in Words".
In Verbis Virtus begins with you entering a dark dungeon that hides many dangers. Unarmed, you can only overcome the obstacles learning the secrets of the arcane arts through ancient texts you discover along the path. These writings teach magic formulas which, if pronounced correctly, enable you to perform several spells. Using these powers in a creative way you can solve puzzles, overcome traps and kill the enemies which try to hinder you.
- Invoke the ancient magic with your own voice
- Use your spells to solve tricky puzzles
- Deal with wicked monsters using your arcane powers
- Uncover the story of a mysterious main character
- Explore the depths of the dangerous Temple
Our team is called Indomitus Games. We are a group of young Italian artists and programmers who have joined forces to develop an innovative gaming product: In Verbis Virtus.
It all began from a university project at the Politecnico di Milano. At the beginning, our group was composed just by few programmers. However, the concept of In Verbis Virtus immediately attracted a lot of interest, so the team quickly grew with graphics and audio specialists that could take care of the artistic aspects of the game. The team now includes:
Here at Indomitus Games we love making games, but creating something like In Verbis Virtus is not that simple. Until today we have put a lot of time and energy and money into this project and we are very proud of what we have achieved so far. We have already published a very early alpha stage playable demo. Since then, we have created much more content of which we showed only a tiny part, and we gathered a quite large community. Yes, we are talking about you, our fans. You are our most valuable asset and now we need your help to complete this ambitious project and bring the world of In Verbis Virtus on your computers.
What is the money for?
Fair question. Basically we need the money for the same things as any other company does: rent, bills, software licenses, personnel, etc... You’re probably wondering whether we need all these money to finish In Verbis Virtus. Believe it or not, it’s not a large sum at all for a video game, and the only reason it’s even cheap is because our staff have voluntereed in the past two years and are willing to work for the bare minimum to try and increase the odds of meeting our goal.
Here is a cost breakdown:
$30,000: operating costs (bills, rent, water, pizza) for 8 people for 5 months
$5,500: external contractors
$4,000: software licenses
$2,500: UDK royalties for the crowfunding campaign
$2,500: Voice recording and localization
$4,500: IndieGoGo and payment processing fees
- $16,000: Manufacturing and shipping physical rewards
Are you asking to cover all the expenses?
No, not at all. The goal amount we are asking for is about 50% of what the production of In Verbis Virtus actually costs. Until now everyone at Indomitus Games worked for the glory but we can't continue without your support. To complete In Verbis Virtus we need to be able to concentrate only on this project for some months. We will also need to hire qualified professionals to do the work that no one in the team can do (translations, dubbing, etc...). Furthermore commercial licenses of some software are very expensive.
Through crowdfunding you will be able to help us dealing with the difficulties of indie game development. Anyway, you won't do this for nothing in return: we prepared tons of really nice rewards for you!
Moreover, as we approach our goal, we can dedicate our time to In Verbis Virtus with more confidence. This means that the sooner we receive your help, the sooner we can deliver the new demo and work toward the final version. So if you intend to contribute, please do so at your earliest possible convenience!
Our main goal is to make In Verbis Virtus a great game but why not making it even greater? And what could make a game better than creating it as the players would like it to be?
We listened to the requests of our fans for additional features and we chose stretch goals accordingly. Every dollar we gather with this campaign will be used to enhance In Verbis Virtus, but some features will be added after the game release to avoid delaying it. We know you can't wait playing In Verbis Virtus!
Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset designed to make 3D gaming even more immersive. Since it was first announced our fans asked us to support this amazing technology and we would really like to do so! In Verbis Virtus would become a very innovative experience with Oculus Rift.
Today smartphones and tablets are widespread, especially among tech enthusiasts such as our supporters, so we decided to use them to enhance the gaming experience. We would like to develop an app that lets you use mobile devices as your spellbook and journal. Further features will be discussed later.
Leap Motion is an innovative device that enables you to control your computer moving your hands and fingers. Wouldn't it be awesome to cast spells with magic gestures in addition (or alternatively) to magic words?
And then there is something that really a lot of people asked: multiplayer. Nowadays a large number of games allow to play over LAN or on the Internet to take fun to another level. We hope that In Verbis Virtus will be no less than these games, but a multiplayer mode needs infrastructures, additional maps and more. That's why we need further help to reach this objective.

Will I get my copy of In Verbis Virtus through Steam?
Yes you will! But we will most likely publish the game through other stores too, in this case you will be able to choose the one you prefer.
Can I already play In Verbis Virtus?
Yes! You can download the demo here. It was published more than a year ago and it was mostly a "proof of concept", it doesn't show what the final game will be.
On which platforms will In Verbis Virtus be available?
At the moment only a PC and a MAC versions are planned but we do not exclude future conversions on other platforms.
It seems that In Verbis Virtus does not work correctly on my PC, what should I do?
Before all be sure that your PC meets the hardware and software requirements, in case it does send a mail to email@example.com describing your problem with as many details as possible and attaching the "My Documents\My Games\In Verbis Virtus\Vreco.log" and "My Documents\My Games\In Verbis Virtus\UDKGame\Logs\Launch.log" files.
Which languages will be available in the game?
You will be able to choose which language to use for spells. We will certainly include a fictional language and English, plus languages created by backers (see Perks and Rewards). The rest of the game will certainly be in English and almost certainly in Italian. Anyway we hope to be able to support more languages.
How can I help In Verbis Virtus developers?
Besides donating to this campaign you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Google+ and tell us your opinion about the news that we publish, this will help us to make the game better.
Will you publish another demo?
Yes, in the next months we will publish another demo with new spells and puzzles, and you'll finally be able to use magic to fight terrible monsters. In the new demo also the voice recognition will be improved and you will have the chance to cast your spells using a custom fantasy language.
Which technologies have been used to develop In Verbis Virtus?
In Verbis Virtus is built with Unreal Engine, on which many renowned games such as Mass Effect and Bioshock are based. The speech recognition software is built upon the open source libraries.
Do I need an expensive microphone?
No, any cheap microphone can do it.
What if I have troubles with the speech recognition?
The game will include an option to 'train' the recognizer to your voice. However, most people will be perfectly fine with the default recognition profile, without any need for training.
Won't it just end up being a brainless screaming game?
Not at all. Puzzles force to experiment with the spells to figure out a solution, while combats require to use multiple spells in the right way to deal with monsters effectively.
How do I upgrade my perk?
If you have already made your contribution and would like to adjust your perk, please contact us. If your preferred perk requires a higher contribution, donate the difference and write to us telling us what is the perk you would like to get. If you have already made your contribution and simply wish to increase your contribution or select an additional perk, you can do this in a separate contribution.
Do I get two copies of In Verbis Virtus with the Sorcerer or any higher perk?
No, you don't. The only difference between Wizard and Sorcerer perk is that Wizard has a lower price and a limited quantity. The same applies to the Spell Singer and Spell Chanter perks. If you want one or more additional copies for your friends you can use the add-on as explained at the of the Perks and Rewards Section.
