The Spark | The Film
The Spark is an upcoming documentary film that shows a blueprint for realistic, immediate solutions. We follow two radical innovators working on two very different projects with one shared goal of a healthy, fair and honest future. The Spark, is about transforming from passive observer to participant in the world around us.
The film is a tribute to the audacious thinking and radical community empowerment that is so desperately needed in response to economic, social and environmental degradation. More than a profile of one inspired collaboration, the film will direct audiences to an online database where hundreds of different projects can find the same kinds of unexpected connections.
The Spark follows Ian’s journey and intimately profiles the daily struggles of Open Source Ecology and Our School at Blair Grocery, ultimately culminating with Nat’s students traveling to Marcin’s farm to build a tractor they can bring home to the 9th Ward to create lasting solutions.
Why We Need You | The Campaign
The Spark needs your help to ignite change around the world! Crowdfunding is a revolutionary tool that allows artist and innovators to connect with the people that really matter, you! Small contributions add up to make a big impact when we work together. Financing an independent documentary the traditional way often is faced with many roadblocks. Documentary films like The Spark typically don't get funded by financing institutions or Hollywood. Why? Studios say documentaries don't make big profits. This means great documentaries go unseen.
The Spark turned to IndieGoGo to help fund the final phases of production. We believe people power can #IgniteTheSpark. Reaching our goal of $49,670 will allow us to complete the film, including the filming of the tractor build as well as post-production tasks including editing, sound, music, animation, and shipping a finished copy off to South by Southwest.
”We are offering a variety of rewards for our backers, including access to exclusive behind-the-scenes video updates, digital downloads and DVDs of the finished film, tickets to our premieres, kits for farmers, kits for makers, and more! We have extra special rewards for high-level backers, including your name in the credits, and an invitation to the film’s tractor build!
Email this post to everyone who may be interested and share it online through social media. It is Ian’s initiative to fund The Spark, including the tractor itself, entirely with support from the community.
We are very excited to be partnering with the International Documentary Association and IndieGoGo to make this campaign possible. As a result of our IDA partnership, your donation to The Spark is tax-deductible!
Marcin | The Engineer
Dr. Marcin Jakubowski is the founder of Open Source Ecology, a network of farmers, engineers, and supporters working together to build the Global Village Construction Set. The GVCS is a plan to redesign the world’s most important machines so that they can be built by anyone, using common tools and materials. Marcin’s team of engineers design and test these machines day and night, and then release the plans over the internet for free.
Nat | The Teacher
Nat Turner is the founder of Our School at Blair Grocery, a youth education center in the Katrina-ravaged 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. The school is empowering at-risk youth to take leadership roles in local, sustainable agriculture, and to transform New Orleans into a city without hunger. Nat’s students have gone from dealing drugs to growing vegetables, and are running a successful produce business while studying for their G.E.D.’s
Ian | The Filmmaker
Ian Midgley travelled across the country for a year and a half, filming underground activists. After meeting almost a hundred people contributing to incredibly diverse projects, Ian was particularly moved by the stories of Marcin and Nat. As he followed their journeys through triumph and tragedy, Ian began working to bring their two initiatives together.
