IEEE Haiti's First Inaugural Conference

in Haiti from April 14-16, 2014

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a large global technical professional organization It is dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. Through events such as conferences, competitions, seminars, and workshops, IEEE Haiti is engaging Haiti’s young minds with the mentoring of professionals to become proactive in their country's development. The STEM fields rule the world with the varieties of gadgets, inventions, and researches. IEEE Haiti is promoting STEM field in Haiti by starting with its most prominent universities.

We, three Electrical Engineering graduates from The City College of New York, had the opportunity to experience the world from a different perspective. We were able to see what universities in the United States had and what those in Haiti lacked. We realized that students in US universities and colleges were more engaged within their fields of studies. They had laboratories, internships, and seminars. They took part in researches, competitions, and workshops. All these events helped to challenge these young minds. We understood that universities in Haiti could benefit from such activities. We were not aware of any organizations involved in technical fields in Haiti. As a result, we took the initiative to create IEEE Haiti.

We also wanted to encourage our successful professionals to give back to their motherland. Many young Haitians leave Haiti without knowing how to give back. We are presenting them an opportunity to make a difference. Some people may believe that they must achieve their personal goals before they reach out to others. We believed that it is possible to do both at the same time. We wanted to be an example, to set a standard. We wanted to show that even after leaving Haiti, we are pushing for its development. We still work to benefit our people, our country. After the earthquake of January 12th 2010, Haiti was in ruin. Now it’s time to rebuild our country. And to do so, we need our men and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

IEEE Haiti seeks to create first-class professionals to improve Haiti’s innovative capacity and global competitiveness. We seek to promote STEM fields in Haiti in order to reach sustainability.

IEEE Haiti has already been actively working with Faculté Des Sciences, one of Haiti’s most prominent universities. We have completed three major conferences at the university:

1-  Haiti 2050: A Biological Destination

2-  What about fiber optics? Toward an improvement in communication in Haiti

3-  Infrastructure in Haiti: Between competitiveness and solidarity

We have also recently launched the FDS Innovation Competition where we are challenging the young minds of Faculté Des Sciences to develop innovative ideas to improve the conditions at the university. Two finalists will gain funding to develop their prototypes.

We have recently been the subject of an article by The Haitian Sentinel.

In the future, we see IEEE Haiti as a standard for our professional minds in Haiti. IEEE Haiti will be the stepping stone for university students and professionals toward to a more sustainable society. We hope to see article about achievements of university students and professional and their contribution to this world.

Your contribution will enable us to have university and high school outreach programs. Due to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, many universities were destroyed. But with your help, we will be able to provide students with lab kits that will enable them to do small experiments and projects. We will also be able to build our very first laboratory. Your contribution to our inaugural event will allow us to invite key speakers and delegates from different companies, universities and high schools in Haiti. The different companies will become major partners in our internship programs, competitions, seminars and workshops.

IEEE Haiti Inaugural Conference

The IEEE Haiti Inaugural Conference will take place in Faculté Des Sciences on April 14-16. Although the university was damage by the 2010 earthquake, it is still functioning. This symbolizes the commitment of its students and professors to education.

On April 14th, the inaugural event will take place. Delegates from different institutions will take part of the event. This will be a great opportunity to raise the awareness of IEEE Haiti and its plans.

On April 15th and 16th, different student activities will be held. The presentations for the FDS Innovation Competition will take place. The IEEE Standards and the importance of women in science will also be presented.

FDS Software Laboratory

With the FDS Software Laboratory, IEEE members will have access to online training courses on a variety of technical subject. There will be online workshops, webinar and web conferencing. Those practices will help to increase attendance and to engage our audience. We want to efficiently advance our goals for STEM education.

Communicating via internet is still an innovative concept. Improvements are being made every moment. We will show our members how to take advantage of the invention of this century. The students will benefit from many open resources for their educational and professional growth. Our workshop’s subjects will help them strengthen the students’ leadership skills, and more importantly their technical skills.

In the FDS Software Laboratory, real world problems will be presented for which the student will analyze, design, and implement solutions. This will help them take a practical hands-on approach. They will practice their programming skills in a variety of languages such as C, C++, python, java, and HTML.

The FDS Software Laboratory will also be beneficiary to students in a variety of technical fields from Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, to Network Engineering. The laboratory will enable students to design, visualize, analyze, and simulate ideas before production. It will be equipped with student-version of a variety of design software such as Photoshop, Autodesk AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Multisim, Microstation, Matlab, and Opnet.
