I wrote this thing…
I wrote, am executive producing and acting in a short film titled I’m just here. It is a project that is very close to my heart for many reasons. My step sister recently came out to me as transgender and is currently transitioning and since then, something struck me as concerning. I realized that while there has been a push for more LGBTQIA characters in film and television, there are very rarely trans characters and the few times that there are, they are almost always stories of extreme tragedy. While I think it's important to honor the darkness that so many trans people have experienced, I also think it's important to show people stories of hope and inspiration. I hate the idea that on the rare occasion there is a trans character that my sister connects with, she is consistently shown a story almost exclusively of sadness. So I wrote a script. It respectfully acknowledges the struggles of a character who is trans but in the end is a story of encouragement and light.
Another topic this story addresses is suicide prevention and mental health. The rate of suicide within the queer community is heartbreaking and within the trans community is even worse. A horrifying 41% of people who are trans have attempted suicide and we want to change that. The story of I’m just here tackles this topic head-on and sheds a light on it where many fear to go.
Some cool things about I’m just here
One thing that makes this project special is the talent that has been drawn to it. We have cast a top actor who has instrumental in LGBTQIA television history. Another thing that sets this project apart is that we have cast an actor who is actually transgender to play the role of the transgender character - an opportunity that is rarely taken in Hollywood and has received much criticism lately. We felt it was very important not to make that mistake and cast authentically.
Another thing that makes us unique is that we are an almost entirely female crew - something that very rarely ever happens. It was important to all of us to give women opportunities to be involved because, sadly, they aren’t given as many as their male counterparts.
Our goal is to make this short and get it into as many festivals as possible and spread awareness and education. We as filmmakers believe that our story has the ability to connect with a very diverse audience and has the potential to save lives.
