Okay so here's the deal:
We founded The I Am Not My Hair Project to talk about the topic of natural hair in the Black community. We felt that creating the space to discuss natural hair was important in expanding the narrow standards of beauty. There are mixed opinions and thoughts on the topic, and we wanted to tell these stories in the hopes that we could create meaningful dialogue.
How are we going to do that?
We started by sharing pictures and stories of women with natural hair on our blog (black-culture.tumblr.com) but we want to share more of these stories. We want to dig deeper and go back to explore the places that shaped these negative opinions we have about black hair. We also want to reach out and find other women with their own stories, their own experiences to share. A full-length documentary film will allow us to do all of this and bring visibility to an issue that is not always publicly discussed, or effectively challenged.
So, what do we need?
Peace. Love. Harmony. Understanding. annnnd of course money.
We need money to get this project off the ground. We want to travel and film on location in each of the different areas and locations we all grew up. We also want to tell the story of other women who live in (cool) faraway places.
This campaign is intended to pay for:
• travel expenses for filming on location
• the film crew
• associated production costs
What will this do?
We hope that by sharing these stories and making this documentary we can reach others and raise awareness. Raise awareness that I am not my hair. Raise awareness that black is beautiful.
We don't want to just tell you our story. . . we want to show you our story. From the inside.
That is why we are making this film.
Any (and every) contribution makes this project happen so Thank YOU everyone!
AND .... Don't forget to include your Twitter handle and Facebook page so that we can 'Like' and Tweet you our undying love and appreciation!
