The story of a spirited young woman who finds adventure in San Francisco. By crossing continents Hanni, in her mid twenties, starts a new life – with unexpected hurdles.
When Hanni gets the offer to work in San Francisco for a year, she doesn’t expect the experience to turn her life upside down. Not only does she get infected by the Silicon Valley virus to start her own company, but she also falls in love with an American guy whose behavior causes her to question her understanding of relationships. Sacrificing German caution for American optimism, Hanni navigates the ups and downs of this bizarre new world, from finding a place to stay in the most expensive city in the U.S., to deciphering the cryptic code of American dating, to developing a taste for the ‘secret sauce’ of Silicon Valley.A rousing, fresh twist on the fictional memoir, How to Love San Francisco – One Year in the City by the Bay, takes you on a year-long excursion of life in this “Least American” of American cities, one filled with culture clashes, international friendships, and an outsider-turned-insider’s view of what living in San Francisco is really like.

- "It reads like an entertaining blend of narrative nonfiction and POV travelogue." - Lisa, Co-founder Coliloquy
- "Really well written and I couldn't stop reading it!" - Lucy in the Sky with a canon, SF photographer
"This book sets up "a fresh, somewhat frisky and unusual “take” on San Francisco. The author teases us with questions that ask us to look at our stereotypes. And she presents an answer about San Francisco not being what we think it is. It’s an “island nation,” not just a city. We liked this fresh voice, which is very hard to attain with travel articles about popular cities that have been written about so many times before. We wanted to turn the page to see what other nuggets the author brought forth." - Jury of Writer's Institute Madison University
About the author
Hi, I'm Johanna, a San Francisco-based writer. How to love San Francisco - One year in the City by the Bay is bringing you the outside-in perspective of San Francisco. It's my declaration of love to my favorite city!
Being a German native I wrote it in German -- getting it out to our English readers is the goal!
This book is written for those of you, who look for information about San Francisco - wrapped in a fictional travel memoir (that means: all the places described do exist, some of the characters are fictional).
My previous work on San Francisco won the '2013 Writer's Institute' and was a semi-finalist of the Tuscon Festival of Books in Arizona. In Germany I was selected as a Top 50 non-fiction author. The German version of the book is one of the highest rated book in its category on Amazon.

Your help will help share the experience of How to Love San Francisco, with the English-speaking world! A German language version is already published and distributed by my publisher in Germany, however, they don't publish internationally, so now with your help, we'll do it together! The first few chapters are already translated and edited. With your help, the rest will follow in the next couple of weeks. Publishing the book in the US will cost a minimum of $9,000.
The basic goal of $9,000 will pay for:
- Copy Editing
- Layout & Design
- Cover Art & Illustration
