Hot Glass Sculpting
Yogesh, a young artist from the small Indian Village has a rare gift. He is
one of those few artists who can transform a piece of glass into anything he
wish – birds, fishes, animals, fruits, trees and even humans hunting in the
wild. Anything and everything that he can imagine can be sculpted from the
And he does it without electricity, moulds, dies or any special equipment whatsoever. Just a kerosene burner flame, glass rod, broken pieces of colored glass bangles and ordinary home tools.
Even the compressor required to
regulate the flame intensity is pedal operated and designed and custom built
entirely from cardboard. Isn't that amazing?
The process, known as Hot Glass Sculpting, is deceptively simple. The glass crystals are softened into viscous fluid by directly inserting in the flame and then given the desired shape and colors before it cools down. That is it....no rocket science.
But as said, the simplicity is misleading. Transforming the glass crystals into a colorful sculpture with perfect details and proportion, needs fluid harmony between imagining and executing.
Eyes, fingers, wrist, feet, brain... in fact every part of the body needs to align itself and co-ordinate with others to bring the sculpture into existence. It’s nothing short of a meditation and there is no margin for error.
And yet despite all its novelty, hot glass sculpting is a dying art.
There were times in history when India had Kings with a keen eye for arts that are beautiful, unique and mesmerizing. They encouraged artists to explore the unimaginable by rewarding them handsomely, not just with gold but also with public recognition. And so, the culture of experimentation in arts flourished. Stone, clay, glass, wood, paper, metal everything and anything would be worked upon and turned into something magnificent.
But slowly, with the advent of industrialization and mass production, the traditional arts began to be neglected and in search of daily livelihood the artists ceased to transfer their skills to the next generation.
Amongst such arts that are on the verge of extinction is Hot Glass Sculpting and Yogesh is amongst a few artists who are keeping it alive even today.
Yogesh’s family has been making hot glass sculptures for centuries with the skill been passed on from one generation to other. But both Yogesh and his elder brother, were reluctant to pursue the life of an artist, for they've seen it brings neither money nor recognition. It’s a life of struggle that nobody would choose to live.
But then destiny has its own way…and when his Father, who had been making sculptures for 30 years, suffered from a stroke, Yogesh had no choice but to fall in and soon discover that the skill came naturally to him. He has been creating and relishing these beautiful sculptures for past 12 years now.
Living in a rented small village home, Yogesh has simple dreams…first to start his own academy wherein he can pass on the art to as many as possible and second to someday live in his own home.
You can help Yogesh to fulfill his dreams. Please check our perks and contribute if you feel it is worth. Your support will empower Yogesh to continue making this world more beautiful.

The Background Story
How would the world be if there were no artists?
This question has been hitting me every time I came across an artist who is struggling to survive in this modern digital world, and by luck I've met many in last 4 years.
Gifted with a rare skill and imagination, this artists find hard to fit in the changing times. One one hand the society is neglecting them and on the other machines and industries are competing with them to win that coveted place on the wall or in the display shelf.
Their misery can be summarised by what a painter had to say when I questioned about such low prices for her exquisite art,
"People don't buy art these days, they buy the raw materials (colors & canvas) and are only willing to pay us the surcharge as labor for putting them in certain pattern. Imagination, vision, skill these are not tangible..what value could they have?"
And yet, she painted. She painted not for her buyers but for herself, for her satisfaction. After all, being an artist has its own curse, they'd rather die than do something that is not creative!
Yes, there are artists who gained name, fame, money everything the world could offer...but then these are very few.
There are tens of thousands more, each with a unique gift, struggling to carry on with their life just because they have no means or knowledge to display their passion, their life to the global audience.
And that's where Empowering Arts was born. We aim to showcase the passion and skills of such grass root artists to the world community and in turn empower and honor these artists with a place that they deserve.
This is our first effort and the money raised will help us to strengthen the platform by turning Yogesh's dreams into reality.
