DanceSafe is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public health organization whose mission is to promote health and safety within the electronic music community. In the U.S., DanceSafe is one of a kind. Since 1999, we have been the only national nonprofit providing honest, fact-based drug information and outreach services to young people at raves, clubs, and music festivals.DanceSafe embraces harm reduction and peer education as guiding principles. We also employ standards and guidelines for best practices as set forth by similar organizations in Europe, where a public health approach to drug use is the norm. Our aim is to establish a similar widespread acceptance for harm reduction as an evidence-based public health practice in North America.
Globally, electronic music is the fastest growing youth culture. Today’s electronic music community is today’s youth. With the ever-increasing popularity of electronic music, and with EDM as the pop culture of the new generation, the need for DanceSafe’s services is at an all-time high.
Drug-Related Deaths and 'Zero Tolerance'
How can we expect young people to make responsible decisions about drug use without the proper tools, resources, and education? Following some recent tragedies across the U.S. and globally, attention has shifted towards providing harm reduction services in the electronic music community. Despite 'zero tolerance' drug policies, many young people choose to use drugs, and while all drug users are at-risk for abuse and addiction, most remain non-problematic, recreational users. Yet because of zero tolerance drug policies, these users are often deprived of the education they need to make informed decisions and stay safe.
It is morally and medically negligent to not address drug use or provide an individual with resources that could potentially save their life. Rather than banning music festivals and closing down nightclubs (which doesn't stop drug use), these events provide a unique opportunity to reach out to today's youth where they gather. Even if the music industry were to disappear tomorrow, drug use will not. Experimentation and use will simply be forced into ‘underground’ spaces with no oversight or mechanism for support, increasing the risk of medical emergencies, overdoses, and deaths.
Volunteers and Chapters
DanceSafe is by and for the electronic music community! We are comprised of dedicated volunteers from the electronic music community who have a sincere interest in helping others. Volunteers serve as a resource, advocate, and peer educator for the rest of their community. They decrease barriers to addressing drug use and encourage others to make informed decisions about their health. DanceSafe volunteers set up harm reduction booths at events to provide FREE essential outreach services such as:
• Health, Safety, and Drug Information
• Condoms and Lube
• Drug Checking (aka "pill testing")
• Cool-Down Areas
• Safe Spaces (for users having non-emergency but negative drug experiences)
In addition to on-site outreach, many chapter liaisons and volunteers around the nation work with city and county officials, law enforcement, academic institutions, other nonprofits, local businesses, promoters, event organizers, and club owners to spearhead safer nightlife initiatives in their own local communities. With fidelity to a community-based public health approach, our volunteers are also involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of services and overall messaging.
Over the past few years, the need for our services has increased drastically, and we have doubled our number of outreach events. In 2013 alone, we distributed approximately 65,000 of our drug information cards. In Fall 2013, we were awarded the prestigious Dr. Andrew Weil Award for Achievement in the Field of Drug Education at the International Drug Policy Reform Conference, which has given us momentum for the year ahead. We anticipate 2014 to be our biggest year yet!
Last September, DanceSafe set-up at TommorrowWorld, which was the largest event DanceSafe has ever been integrated into, to-date, with an overall attendance of 140,000! We had over 10,000 booth visitors and through our mobile outreach team, an additional 7,000 healthful interactions with event attendees. Total, we distributed:
● 16,000 Drug Information Cards
● 15,000 Earplugs
● 5,000 Condoms
● 600 Gallons of Water
● 180 FL OZ. of Sunscreen
Your Funding Will Support...
We are experiencing organizational growth and focusing efforts on continuing education and sustainability. We have assessed the needs and assets of our community and developed a new training program for our volunteers. Money raised will be used to implement and evaluate the NEW training program! Additionally, we need money to expand our volunteer base and engage in NEW chapter development as we continue to grow at a similar pace as the industry. Finally, funds from this campaign will help us with many of the supplies listed above and help support our travels to and from events!
