Our mission is to provide access to healthy food and high quality groceries, to create good jobs for the local community, and to play a leading role in the revitalization of Oakland’s waterfront.

We are developing a mid-sized community market in Oakland’s Jack London neighborhood. The market will feature an array of sustainably grown produce and proteins, a deli, a bulk section, a community gathering space, and more.

The team behind the development of the market is committed to empowering workers with ownership and decision making at their place of work. For this reason and more, the market will be structured as an employee-owned cooperative

We are negotiating possible locations ranging from 5,000 - 10,000 sq. ft. in the Jack London neighborhood (I-880 to the waterfront, MLK to Oak St.) 

Your contribution will give us the funds necessary to hire a team of lawyers that specializes in small-business friendly financing structures. Thanks to your contribution, they will help us initiate a form of fund-raising called a Direct Public Offering. Through the DPO we will be able to offer investment opportunities in our enterprise to members of our community and beyond, rather than simply to certain high-net worth individuals the feds call “accredited.” We believe our neighbors are sophisticated enough to know that it's worth it to invest in their community, and we want to give them an opportunity to do so.

This campaign is the initial test of our theory that, when given the opportunity, people will support local entrepreneurship.We chose grassroots fund-raising so that members of our community can be involved from the very beginning, play an integral role in the success of our business, and help bolster to the ongoing development of our wonderful neighborhood.

Our startup team is composed of 7 young Oaklanders passionate about food justice and sustainable economic development. We have diverse backgrounds in community organizing, financial services, retail consulting, cooperative grocery store startups, fundraising, and food service management. In order to keep costs low, we would love to deliver as much as possible in person and not via mail. If you live outside of the Bay Area, we will be happy to mail you your rewards. Depending on how successful we will be and the timing of various suppliers, we hope to be commencing distribution of rewards by mid-January.

The success of this project will hinge on our ability to secure enough financing to take us through the startup and launch phases. What we are raising on Indiegogo will give us the capital to hire lawyers and accountants to initiate other rounds of fundraising.

We conducted a neighborhood survey that yielded great results in terms of validating our vision and the need for what we plan to offer. If we can get to the point of opening our doors and we continue serving our community, this project will be a great success; in large part thanks to your generosity and trust.
