There's a special moment when you sit in a cold theatre, the quiet rumblings of anxious theatre patrons begin to subside and the lights fade to black. The anticipation of a great show builds inside you, and it comes to life with the first chord of the Pit Orchestra's Overture.
What if, though, this Orchestra only contains one or two keyboardists and a percussionist? The grandeur of "Tonight" from West Side Story would be lost, or the intricacy of "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera would fall flat.
This is what the cast of Side Show is facing at the Sarasota Players. Although the Players is a super successful not-for-profit theatre in the heart of Sarasota, FL (the Cultural Coast of Florida), budgets are tight at the end of the year, and unfortunately, the budget did not include for a large orchestra that this musical dearly needs.
Side Show tells the story of Daisy and Violet Hilton, the Siamese twins who navigate their way from the freak shows of early circus life in the 1920s to the footlights of Vaudeville and the silver screen in the 1930s. Along the way, they fall in and out of love, find and lose their dreams, and learn that their true companion has always been by their sides.
The thing about Side Show that's different from most other musicals is that it is "sung-through," much like an Opera or the modern day Operetta. Almost the entire musical is underscored with music (from the Orchestra) and all dialogue is sung. This is increasingly difficult to set the emotion and tell a story that will move the audience without additional musicians to join our Pit Orchestra.
That's why we need your help.
With the funding of this project, we would be able to hire a multi-talented musician who can play upwards of 4 instruments and help supplement the sound of our small Orchestra. The experience for the actors who have put hundreds of hours into rehearsal would be priceless.
Thank you for your consideration of funding our project. We open in less than 2 weeks, and your generosity can make us feel loved, important, and make our show the best it can be.
This campaign is an initiative of the cast and crew of Side Show the Musical, not of the Players Theatre itself.
