About the Program & Event:
Under the guidance of co-directors Sam Ormson and Eric Smedsrud, the MVHS music program includes three concert bands, two jazz ensembles, a percussion ensemble, string and chamber orchestras, a pep band, various chamber ensembles, and a strong leadership team. The Jazz Ensemble I was invited to perform in the 2011 Midwest Clinic in Chicago and has received top honors at the Clark College Jazz Festival (2010-2012, sweepstakes featured performance 2013), the Skyview Jazz Festival (2008-2012), and the Columbia Basin College Jazz Unlimited Festival (2010-2013). The Wind Ensemble at Mountain View has performed at the keynote address of the Washington Music Educators Convention (2006, 2010) and the Western International Band Clinic (2006). In addition to the Bands of America festival, Mountain View has once again been invited to perform at the Washington Music Educators Convention this upcoming February.
In July of 2013, we received an email that formally invited us into the Bands of America: Music for All concert band festival and conference in Indianapolis, IN, to perform on their coveted "Featured Stage." One of only 16 bands in the country to be invited AND the only band from the Northwest, this is one of the highest honors that a high school program can achieve.
Why We Need Help:
As with any travel opportunity, there are some hefty costs associated with the event, including performance fees, travel, food, lodging, transportation of equipment, etc. As students and parents scramble to gather the money needed for the trip -- approximately $1,500 per child -- our leadership team has been putting together numerous fundraisers in the hopes of offsetting even a small portion of the cost.
In lieu of the incredibly large amount of money that it will take to get everyone to Indianapolis and back, we have decided to try for only a small fraction of the overall cost on Indiegogo -- a mere 5%, to supplement all other fundraising efforts.
Any and all money raised (even if our goal is surpassed) will go directly into our scholarship fund -- aimed at helping children and their families who are not able to cover cost of the trip per student. Numerous families in the program have two or even three students going, which creates a huge financial burden. Our goal is to completely eliminate cost as an issue; the absolute last thing that we want is for someone to not be able to attend this once-in-a-lifetime experience because of a financial situation that could easily have been lessened or even avoided.
"Attending and performing at the Midwest Clinic [in Chicago, 2011] had a profound effect on me as both a musician and as a human. The months of intensive rehearsal and personal practice taught me a great deal about the importance of discipline and motivated repetition. The payoff of the trip actual was made all the better by this work. Finally, the actual experience of going to Chicago was one of some serious importance to me: nothing can ever top listening to world class musicians with friends that love the music as much as you do. In short, the Midwest Clinic trip had a huge impact on my own decision to pursue music and at at the same time made me develop skills that have helped me in multiple areas of my life."
