I have been awarded a one month filmmaking artist in residence in Belgrade Serbia. I am very excited to have this opportunity to travel to this part of the world, and create a new film based on my experiences. I was one of nine international filmmakers awarded this residency and the only American of the group. Living in Seattle I also have the longest plane ride of the awardees.
I am a visual artist who makes experimental films. Many of my films have screened in film festivals around the world and won some awards. This residency was one of those awards. It’s difficult enough to find money to create films let alone travel with them, so most of my traveling is done close to home. This opportunity is very important to me, but without help I won’t be able to except this residency.
My other project while there would be organizing a cultural film exchange between Belgrade and Seattle filmmakers. I’m very active in the local experimental and animation communities in Seattle and would like to bring a program of these films to Belgrade and curate a program of Serbian experimental films to bring back here. In the past I’ve curated programs of local experimental and animation programs that have screened at Northwest Film Forum in Seattle, Portland’s Northwest Film Center, and San Francisco’s Artist Television Access.
If you’ll like more information about my films, including a filmography and artist statement I have a blog- RE:films
What I Need & What You Get
What I’m asking for are basic funds not covered by my host. The minmum I would need to except this residency is roundtrip plane fare to Belgrade. My host, the Academic Film Center of the Student's City Cultural Center will cover my food and lodging while in the city. Any money raised above my goal would go towards other travel expences, and opportunites that might arise. What I can give in return are documents of my trip, photographs of the city and the interworkings of the filmmaking community. And when I return admission to my curated Serbian film program (if you live in Seattle), and hand made signed DVD’s of the resulting new film.
What if I can’t make my goal
I’ll still have time to raise funds, and your donations will help.
Having been awarded this residency is an honor and an exciting opportunity to meet and collaborate with filmmakers from another country. I’m fascinated by the history of Belgrade, and excited by the prospect of making a new film that’s somehow inspired by that history. I will also be able to share this opportunity by staging screenings of film programs by Seattle and Belgrade filmmakers. Hopefully this would be an ongoing exchange.
