Help Save Bibliohead Bookstore

We must vacate from our profitable location for earthquake retrofitting. As the landlords do not want to help us return, we must now find a new home.

FINAL HOURS! HELP US WITH A BLAST OF CASH!

Many Thanks to all who have contributed so far! We love you back!

*********************************************************************

AUGUST 7 UPDATE : Current building owners have refused our efforts for a new lease after retrofitting is complete. They have reneged on their offer to let us stay through the end of the year. As of this writing WE MUST leave September 30. We are still looking for a space in San Francisco, but this has not been easy. Many properties are in limbo that might ordinarily be available, and competition is high. Funds raised from our Indiegogo campaign will help us with unforeseen moving expenses and create a safety net as we restart in an entirely new location. Please give what you can-- community support will show prospective new landlords a strong foundation from customers and bookstore lovers everywhere. Even if we don't make our goal, every little bit will help.

Do continue to tell your friends and help get the word out on social media. We have extended our campaign to give us a little more time, till August 21.

Thanks for all your help!

Melissa Richmond- Head Bibliohead

*********************************************************************

My name is Melissa Richmond, and I am the proud owner of Bibliohead Bookstore in San Francisco. I have been lucky enough to do what I love most for almost 30 years: sell books, connect with customers -- maybe even open minds and help people.

In 2004, friends and I did an amazing thing: we held a bookstore-raising. In less than a month we cleared the space, built more than 30 eight-foot bookcases, and filled them. Despite doubts of others and the social climate that says bookstores are destined for failure, I have made a modest living selling mostly used and some new books. Every day people come in and say “how beautiful” and how much they love Bibliohead. They purchase books one at a time, or by the pile. It seems like a miracle, but success was not easy. We worked hard, paid our rent, and have averaged 7 percent growth annually. I like to think my experience in the business helped Bibliohead do well. In April we were fine. Now? Not so much.

The Challenge Before Us

In May we got the news of the mandated earthquake retrofitting (which is not required until 2018) along with the building owners’ planned renovations. These projects will displace us, books and all, for four months after our lease expires. If the owners deem it feasible, we can come back for a steep price. They demand we perform our own costly renovations, and then pay double our current rent.

Bibliohead needs your help to secure our future. Our goal is to raise at least $60,000. If we can come to terms with building owners on a reasonable price to return, we need help with moving and storage costs to vacate and complete the required improvements, Having more in the bank will help us negotiate from a stronger vantage point. If we cannot agree, we need help with moving, a deposit, marketing, and any necessary preparations for a new store.

Either way, funding will assure a prudent reserve to ride out the changes. Interruption to business or starting over will not be easy. Rent will be higher anywhere we go. We are lucky to have the recipe of factors that our neighborhood, Hayes Valley, offers. It is hot with development, bringing new residents and tourists every day. Folks from the symphony, opera, ballet, schools, and Civic Center, all support Bibliohead. We would like to stay in our current location, where our neighbors would rather have Bibliohead than another boutique.

But the market may price us out of Hayes Valley. Please help us find a new home or make a new home here. Fight back against the naysayers and real estate vultures that are turning the city we love into a mirage. Please help this lively gem of a store stay well, so it doesn’t end before it’s time. The future of my family and the city is at stake.

If we don’t make our funding goal, it will be tough—but we will still fight for a home for Bibliohead. If you can’t contribute now there are other ways to help:

** Tell your friends and share our video with everyone via social media.

**Donate cool books to the store that we can sell or use in the campaign.

**We need press! Force the Chronicle, Guardian, and other outlets to give this issue the coverage it deserves!

**Don’t stop fighting for a real San Francisco.

**And of course, shop at Bibliohead!

Let us Lure you with Perks!

If you can contribute, we do have some great incentives for your contributions: rare first editions, wine, custom haiku, even massage and acupuncture treatments. Check out the offers listed here on our Indiegogo page, which will be updated as the campaign progresses. Thank you for your support. We hope to see you soon.
