Who We Are
SAFE Samford is a group of Students, Alumni, and Faculty from Samford University, a Christian university in Alabama, that wants to the see the campus become a safer space for LGBTQ students and their allies.
In 2011, we formed a Facebook group to begin connecting with one another and exploring ways to help our beloved university change for the better. Two years later, our group is 500 strong and even more passionate about making an impact on Samford, the city of Birmingham, and beyond! You can learn more about our group at our website safesamford.org. You can also visit our Facebook group.
What We Want to Do
We want to bring Jennifer Knapp to Birmingham for one of her very special Inside Out Faith performances, in which she performs some of her award-winning songs and discusses her journey as a person of faith and member of the LGBTQ community. You can learn more about it at insideoutfaith.org.
The performance will be completely free and open to the public at a central location in Birmingham, AL on November 16th of this year. We are excited about the opportunity to show the local community that being a person of faith and being gay aren’t mutually exclusive identities.
How You Can Help
By donating to this project, you’ll be helping us pay for Jennifer’s fees, sound equipment rentals, the cost of the perks that you see listed to the right, and a get together on Samford's campus for homecoming.
Make sure you check out some of the higher-level perks like VIP seating or a special Cocktail Hour with Jennifer before the performance, as well as our new signature t-shirt!
Remember that we won’t be charging for tickets for the event, so you can even think of your donation as buying a ticket to an amazing concert! Not to mention you’ll be helping others attend an inspiring event.
We know we can’t wipe out homophobia in every religious community, but we do think we can make the world a safer place for people who are struggling with how their sexual identity connects with their spiritual identity. The best way to fight fear and prejudice is by starting a conversation, which is exactly what we will do with both of these events!
Other Ways You Can Help
Even if you're not in a place to give financially at this time, please do share the word about our campaign on Facebook, Twitter, or even your blog!
This is a life-changing event that we feel passionate about. Help us make it a reality!
