WHO I AM
My name is Riley Orton. I am 9 years old. I live with my family in Kenwood CA. I’m in 3RD grade at Prestwood Elementary School. I was born 2.5 months premature and my mother and I almost died. I have come so far from surgery at 3 months old to learning differences and delays, compromised immune system, sensory integration disorder and being sick longer and harder. Against all these odds of life, I have a BIG heart for children living in poverty in Africa. I know that they do not have all they need to thrive. I want to make a difference! I started helping children when i was only 5 years old after seeing a TV commercial which showed children being given only a small amount of rice to eat. Since then, I have raised school supplies for children in Africa through Develop Africa org. My work inspired a non profit in Kenya, East Africa to name itself Riley Orton Foundation after me as a way of honoring me for my kind heart. I am so touched and I believe that I have found a legitimate conduit to channel my energies and resources to a cause that has always been on my heart. Read more here Press Democrat News
The school urgently needs funds to construct a new
classroom, provide the children with school supplies, uniforms, shoes, pay the
teachers and feed the children. Today 60 little girls from preschool to 1st
grade attend the school. Next year they will admit 20 more girls as the school
expands to 2nd grade. We cannot change the whole world but i believe all of us can change a little bit of it. We need your help, together we can make a change!
SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Obunga Slums is located in Kisumu, Kenya (East Africa). The extreme poverty in this area forces many children to drop out of school and collect and sell scrap metal to fend for their families. Despite the free primary education in Kenya, many children are still unable to access quality education due to overcrowding in classrooms and the nominal levies charged as exam fees and remedial lessons fees which many parents in the slum cannot afford. This leaves many children especially girls uneducated forcing them to early marriages and lifelong poverty. www.akilischool.weebly.com
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW:
We have faced many challenges but have always counted on the generous
support of friends, but now we are facing our biggest challenge which goes
beyond our financial capacities and we urgently need your help; Prince of Peace
Church Kisumu allowed us to use the church compound to build classrooms, library
and to use the church hall to host two classes for two years starting January
2012. We were expected to move out by December 2013 to allow the church to use
it for its activities. We have not been able to raise funds to buy land and build
our school. After pleading with the church in October 2013, they have allowed us to stay until the end of third term in November 2014 on condition that we look for our own place. We have found a charity org in Kenya that wants to build permanent classrooms for our school. The condition is that we MUST have a piece of land with a clean title deed and a building plan from a qualified architect. We have to find the funds
to buy a piece of land so that we can get our school built!!
Having started the school with a loan of $6,000 which we used to buy reading desks, chairs, buy text books for the library, pay electricity bills and hire teachers for one year at the beginning of the project, we have only been able to repay $1,725. We thought that parents would help us repay the loan by contributing $5 every month. Unfortunately, due to poverty, they have not been able to do so. We need to complete the repayment by January 2014 failure to which we risk losing the school property.
We also need to provide books, uniforms, shoes, school supplies and food for
the children and pay/hire more teachers at our school so that we can provide quality education for the children.
If we fail, the children will undoubtedly suffer and risk dropping out
of school and all that we have accomplished until now will merely be a
memory for them. If we succeed, we will keep this dream alive and the children
will have a real future out of poverty. More information here : http://akilischool.weebly.com/ Or Akili Facebook Fanpage
WHAT YOUR DONATION WILL BE USED FOR:
We have found a suitable land in the heart of Obunga Slum and we have got quotation for constructing 2nd grade classroom so that the school can expand to the next class in January 2014. We only need the money to realize it. Even though we are fundraising here for US $45, 886, the completion of the construction of 2nd grade classroom, purchasing the piece of land and providing school supplies, uniforms, shoes, feeding program, electricity bills, internet connection for the library and paying 5 teachers, 1 program coordinator, 1 office secretary, 1 school administrator, 1 accountant, 1 cook, 1 watchman, 1 library manager, 1 child counselor/Discipleship teacher, and 1 teacher on practice will require around US $ 70,672.24 for the year 2014. We are not asking for the full budget since we fear that not reaching it would mean paying a higher percentage for this crowd-funding service. Still, if we reach the goal of US $45, 886, we will be able to buy the land and build the most basic classroom for our children, repay the loan of $4,275 and provide the children with food, uniforms, books and pay teachers. However, the more funds we receive, the more we can realize our dream for construction of permanent classroom and hiring enough and qualified teaching staff for the children.
