Who We Are...
At Community Yoga Vancouver we believe everyone with breath can practice yoga. We're a group of yoga teachers who want to make yoga accessible, affordable, friendly and fun. Over the past year we've been offering 3 to 6 classes a week, but slowly we're gaining too many students to fit into our current space. On top of that our teachers want to teach more classes and we have more teachers than we can fit on our current schedule. If you donate to us we will use the money to open up our own studio. All of our classes and workshops will be free, by-donation or sliding scale, with no-one ever turned away for lack of funds. We need your help to open the doors to a community space everyone can belong to.
What We Need & What You Get
Our goal is to fundraise $7,500. The money we fundraise will go towards:
paying our damage deposit
supplementing our first few month's rent
making the space fully accessible
purchasing a sound system
decorating the space
Our goal is to open the studio by November of 2013
If you donate to us you can recieve copies of our first 2 zines, class passes, private lessons or a workshop for your organization on yoga and social justice. Our class passes offer competitive rates and are transferable, so you can bring friends along with you to class. You can also receive a private yoga lesson from one of our teachers to get advice and guidance on building your personal practice. The workshops we offer on social justice and yoga have been taught in yoga studios across the country and are highly regarded by our students. Any of these perks will provide you with a doorway to being a meaningful, connected member of our quickly growing community.
Community Yoga Vancouver is creating a yoga studio unline any other in Vancouver. We are not a for-profit business, but we are also not a charity model. We've eliminated the owners and the massive overhead of most studios to cut our costs and make the primary financial exchange of our project be between students and teachers. At our studio no one will ever be turned away for lack of funds.
Our schedule will be different from most studios. While it will provide regular flow, vinyasa, hatha, yin and restorative classes it will also provide safer-space classes for people who don't usually feel comfortable in yoga studios. These classes will include several queer classes, classes for people with fat bodies, ESL classes and classes for people of colour. We are always looking for more teachers to join our collective and expand our schedule.
Our studio will also operate as a community space where people can host events, workshops and dance parties. We truly believe it's possible to build strong, lasting, healing and supportive community using yoga as the foundation. We want our studio to be a space you feel you can belong to - no matter who you are.
