Nurse burnout is almost an epidemic due to stress, inadequate staffing, low pay, and lack of recognition.

So where should nurses turn? How can they take better care of themselves and show up at the bedside to care for those who need them?

The answers to these questions and more are in my book: Minding the Bedside: Nursing from the Heart of the Awakened Mind. My name is Jerome Stone. I’ve been a Registered Nurse for over 30 years. I’m a successful blogger, published author, and meditation instructor. Most important, I’m committed to transforming the way nurses show up at the bedside by teaching them how to be compassionate toward themselves and others.

My book helps nurses learn to open their hearts and minds to care for those who need them.

About the Book:

The first run of Minding the Bedside: Nursing from the Heart of the Awakened Mind was released in September 2011. The book is for nurses and healthcare practitioners and is a thorough guide to meditation and compassion practices. The practices and techniques covered in this book can help to antidote and alleviate the stress that nurses and healthcare practitioners experience working at the bedside.

The book has received positive reviews in peer-reviewed journals, online publications, and websites.

Since publishing the book, I’ve been creating tons of free content on the book’s blog-site, offering wit and wisdom to the thousands of readers who appreciate what I have to offer. I’ve even published two FREE ebooks on the site that continue to be downloaded and enjoyed by visitors to the site. In the recent months, visits to my site have increased and there’s a lot of interest in what I have to offer, but I’m not a publicist, and I need money to fulfill my vision.

What’s Been Done So Far:

This book is an extension of the guiding principle of my life, serving others. In my work-life, I've shared my skills and expertise, as well as my compassion, with my patients. In my writing and on my blog, I've done the best that I can to share what I've learned in my meditation practice with my readers. As a contributor, you’ll be helping me to be of service, sharing what I’ve learned through the application of meditative awareness and compassion at the bedside. You’ll also be directly involved in helping others by giving them tools to help them work with their emotional suffering and turmoil. Additionally, you’re paying it forward by helping those who help others.

What Needs to Be Done Now:

It’s been a great year but now it’s time for a cash-transfusion to boost my exposure, visibility, online presence and…sales! The thing is, I’ve spent ALL of my savings just getting this far. There are over 3.1 million nurses in the US and over 20 million nurses worldwide. There's a market for this book, and in the nursing profession there’s an incredible need for the methods and practices outline in this book.

This is where you come in. Help me with the infrastructure and support to get my book into the hands of as many nurses and healthcare professionals as possible. I need the support of the Indiegogo community to help move to the next stage to promote this book. I need you!

The Financial Scoop and Needs Breakdown:

I don’t want my book to sit on a shelf with the other 5-trillion books in print. I want to it to have an impact and benefit people. So, here’s what I need to do it right.

These amounts are based on what I’ve spent previously on my book (as well as what I haven’t been able to spend!) and are based on what printers, distributors, publicists, editors, and other successful authors have shared with me on what to expect my expenses to be.

Big Publishing Houses Have the Cash, Self-Published Authors (Usually) Don't:

You can see that the total amount that I need far exceeds what I’m asking for. Why? Because this list itemizes what I’ll need in an “ideal” list. And a full-on, no-holds-barred campaign would probably be double that. That's what traditional big publishing houses can spend on the promotion of a book. However, I chose not to go with a big publishing house because I didn't want someone else deciding when and how I could give my content away. And I understand that the ideal may not be what I will get in reality. So, I’m going for $15,000 as a ballpark figure of the minimum that I need to do a successful launch. If I get more than that amount, that’s awesome!

And…what if I don’t get the full amount? I’m going to do it anyway, but I’ll have to take smaller steps. I’m bound and determined to get this material out and to make an impact on how nurses can deal with work-related stress in a positive way. I’ll scrimp where I have to, but I’d rather not, and work hand-to-mouth, which I’m already doing, but it would sure be easier to do this without having to sweat the details. If I have to, I’ll launch a second campaign after I get as far as I can with what I’ve received from this one.

The Impact of it All:

I love to serve others in whatever way I can. I need to be of service to feel like I’m making a difference in this crazy and often mixed up world. And using what I’ve learned in life and sharing it with others, especially if I can help to prevent and/or alleviate pain and suffering, is what it’s all about!

My track-record speaks for itself. I’ve been a successful professional for over 30 years. Having made a mid-life career change, I’ve successfully self-published a book, have learned the art of blogging and entrepreneurship, and have learned to help others through the written word.

What you’ll be doing by contributing to this campaign could end up benefitting countless others. What you’ll get, tangibly, are the perks listed to the right of this column. The intangible is even more important; somewhere, a nurse will read this book and, because of you, will show up at the bedside more present and more compassionate, able to do his or her work, with an aware mind and an open heart.
