Want to Hear from Me Personally? Watch This...
The 1-Minute Introduction
Hi! My name is Philip Blackett from Memphis, TN. In my short life, I've been blessed to get accepted into numerous colleges (including the Ivy League), worked and interned on Wall Street and at a number of Fortune 100 companies and non-profits and recently got accepted into my dream business school: Harvard Business School!
Now, I want to pay it forward and share with our young people how they can get ACCEPTED into their dream schools and get HIRED into their dream jobs and internships too by teaching them how to ACE their interviews.
"To Whom MUCH is Given, MUCH is Required"
Why do I want to Help our Young People?I recognize that I didn't achieve my dreams on my own.
Someone helped me out. Actually a LOT of people helped me out.
Especially this person...
My grandmother saw potential in me before many others did. I share more about her impact on me when you watch the video above. An elementary school teacher by trade, she believed in me and the beauty of my dreams before I could. She worked with me when others would have given up.
My biggest joy in life was making her proud and watching her smile. When she passed away in 2011 from a really tough battle with pancreatic cancer, I made a commitment to invest in young people the way my grandmother did in me.
How did this Interviewing get started? While I was working on Wall Street after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I wanted to share with other college students some best practices to help them when they interviewed for summer internships and full-time jobs after they graduated.
"If you get, GIVE. If you learn, TEACH." -- Maya Angelou (1928-2014)
One day, I combined all the best tips and strategies I learned over many years into one presentation and called it the "3 B's to Ace Your Interview" workshop.
I first did this workshop at my alma mater for a couple audiences and got great feedback. However, it was only until I got an email from one of the students telling me that he successfully got a summer internship after applying my advanced interviewing principles...that was when I started thinking "there may be something more to this..."
Listen to What Others Had to Say...
Fast forward 3 years later...I just got into my dream business school, and I wanted to help my friends get into business school too. I did personalized mock interviews for a number of them and got great feedback again.
Once I started hearing some of my friends ACING their business school interviews afterwards (a few of them now joining me this fall at Harvard), that was when I knew I needed to bring this to the masses to help THOUSANDS of young people ACE their interviews to get into their dream schools and get hired into their dream jobs and internships too.
Afterwards, I started creating my offerings to help young people ace their interviews and founded a mission-driven startup: Magnetic Interviewing, LLC
Practically, everything is in place but I need YOUR support to help me reach over 12,000 young people to share my best practices and help them ACE their upcoming interviews this year, so they can get ACCEPTED into their dream schools (both college & graduate school) and get HIRED into their dream jobs and internships.
Imagine the type of impact we can have on the lives of 12,000 young people nationwide by helping them get accepted into college or graduate school, get hired at their dream job or internship, get off unemployment or even become independent enough to move out of their parents' house once and for all...
That's what WE can do together with your support of this campaign!
What We Need The Money For?
By helping us raise at least $50,000, you will help us afford the following:
- Web infrastructure to best attract & serve 12,000+ young people
- Customer relationship management to manage & grow our business
- Social Media Marketing & Advertising to get the word out nationwide
- Other operating expenses to keep the lights on & our business running
What if WE raise MORE than $50,000?
Raising $50,000 will help position us to start serving the 12,000 young people to help them ACE their interviews. If we raise MORE than $50,000, we will be able to build more intensive grassroots & multimedia marketing campaigns in specific target markets to build relationships with the right partners to help us serve beyond 12,000 young people in the long term. Listed below are our "Stretch Goals", along with the specific target market we can better serve if we reach a certain funding level:
- $60,000 = Boston / Cambridge, MA
- $75,000 = Memphis, TN
- $100,000 = Research Triangle Park (Raleigh, Durham, & Chapel Hill, NC)
- $120,000 = Atlanta, New York City or Charlotte, NC
- $150,000 = Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, TX
The Impact that WE can Have Together
This campaign will help us address two major issues among our youth:
Access to Higher Education
- Over 17.4 million students are enrolled in college
- Yet, college admissions is more competitive than ever before (2013 stats)
- Acceptance rates at the top 50 U.S. business schools are lower also
- Because getting accepted (even with a scholarship) is so ultra-competitive, the interview has become even more important now
- In the USA, youth unemployment was 13.2% in May 2014 (overall: 6.3%)
- Youth make up 40% of the world's unemployed with 12.6% global UE rate
- Youth Unemployment has become South Africa's most critical challenge
- Youth Unemployment is not only a problem in the USA and South Africa, but also in Australia, Great Britain, Italy, China and other countries
- With more Baby Boomers retiring each year, replacing them in the job market has become even more competitive globally - putting more emphasis on the interview to help one differentiate from the competition
The Bottom Line
Even if our young people have all the necessary education and skills to perform well, because there is a limited supply of available jobs, competition is so intense and cutthroat, and they have to figure out a better way to differentiate themselves so they have a better chance to get the job. This also applies to higher education, where our students are competing with their counterparts from all around the world for spots at the same institution. To get accepted into your dream school, you have to stand out from the crowd.
In 2014, one of the best ways to stand out from the crowd, whether you're applying to go to school or to get a job, is to ACE your interview. There's not much discussion about how to ACE your interview vs. how to craft your resume or how to study for the SAT / ACT / GMAT. Through Magnetic Interviewing, I created something that I wished I had when I was applying to schools, scholarships, internships and jobs. It is the culmination of years of trial-and-error, much research, and best practices learned from others. I want to be able to provide this to at least 12,000 young people over the next 12 months and grow that number this time next year.
However, I cannot do this on my own. I am asking for your support - whether by selecting a perk on the RIGHT side of THIS page, coupled with a financial contribution, or by sharing this campaign with others who may be interested.

Why Indiegogo? Why fund this project with crowdfunding?
This campaign is about our young people. Before we consider any angel, seed or venture capital funding, we believe that the first line of support should come from our community of young people and those who believe in the future of our young people.
Can you describe to me what Magnetic Interviewing is?
Magnetic Interviewing, LLC is a for-profit social enterprise that focuses on helping young people ace their interviews so they can get accepted into their dream schools and get hired at their dream jobs and internships.
Why help 12,000 young people? How will you help them?
When this social enterprise was created, I had a vision of having a significant impact in the lives of MANY young people. Success to me, in our first 12 months of operation, is to help at least 12,000 young people ACE their interviews so they can get ACCEPTED into their dream schools and / or get HIRED for their dream jobs and internships. That comes out to about 1,000 young people per month on average.
This is a goal that, with your support, we can achieve in our first 12 months not only through our online offerings but also through collaborating with local high schools, community colleges, colleges & universities, graduate schools, career centers, college & career guidance counselors, complimentary businesses and non-profit organizations. YOUR support will help us achieve OUR mission.
Which interviews have YOU aced using the principles and strategies behind Magnetic Interviewing?
From using the best practices and strategies within Magnetic Interviewing, I have received acceptance and job offers from such places as:
- Harvard University (with Navy ROTC scholarship)
- University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Morehead-Cain scholarship)
- Yale University
- Brown University
- University of Pennsylvania
- University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA)
- Goldman Sachs
- One Economy Corporation
- Harvard Business School
- The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania MBA program)
In full disclosure, to prevent any potential confusion, this campaign and Magnetic Interviewing are not affiliated, endorsed or supported by any of the above institutions, companies or organizations.
Why not wait until after you complete business school to start this?
With me being in school for two years, our upcoming high school juniors and seniors are at risk of not having the opportunity to learn these strategies and best practices to help increase their chances of acing their interviews to get into their dream schools. That's two years worth of thousands of college students who would not potentially have access to this information before they apply to fall / summer internships and part-time / full-time jobs during school and after graduation.
Our young professionals looking to go back to school or applying to their next job would be better off if they had this available to them in 2014 vs. 2016. The information is ready to be shared with those young people willing to invest in themselves and their careers to get what they want. Two years' deferral represents two years' of missed opportunities for thousands of young people. We don't want to risk that.
