We are alumni/ae of Teaneck High School in Teaneck, NJ. When we heard about the vandalism that occurred in the school on the night of April 29th, we wanted to do something. We wanted to show the Teachers, administrators and staff that they are a part of a community that remembers and values Teaneck High School. This was inspired by Rachel Saul, Class of '92, who posted her idea on Facebook.
We've set the goal at $620, hoping to get 620 people who care about Teaneck High School to donate at least $1 each. That's ten times the number of kids who were arrested on Wednesday night. If you donate any amount, your name will be included on a poster that will be given to the school.
After we pay for the poster, the rest of the money will be donated to Teaneck High School. We haven't figured out yet how we'll donate it--we've got calls in to the Principal, the Superintendent and the Board of Education because we're hoping to donate in a way that will benefit the Teachers and the school the most. But the most important thing is to show the current community of THS that we're out there and we care.
When we hear from the school, we'll post an update saying exactly how the money will be donated. If we don't hear anything, we'll donate to the PTSA and specify that the money should be used to maintain or improve the building and grounds.
**UPDATE 5/12/14: We have our spending plans.
1) The poster *FUNDED*
2) A scholarship for one Senior in each of the four classes currently in the school. The Teachers will select the student who has done the most to leave the THS Community better than she or he found it to receive the scholarship. *FUNDED*
3) If we make our goal, we will treat the Custodians to lunch in appreciation for all that they do, but especially to thank them for donating their time to clean up THS on May 1.
4) If we exceed our goal and have enough money, we will buy lunch for the whole staff at THS.
The most important thing isn't how much we raise--it's how many people come out to support the school.
*It turns out we can't collect class years easily, so we'll just list everyone who donates in alphabetical order. Or some order.
