Summary

A Short movie about Liron, a young Israeli man, who practices in combat fitness along with his best friends Tomer and Efi. They are preparing for their military recruitment for combat units in the IDF.

The guys are fans of  Maccabi Haifa football club, and during the week of the derby match against Hapoel Haifa, Liron is facing a Medical Committee deciding he couldn’t join the combat forces of the IDF.

In the Israeli society, where combat service is a milestone in the development of the masculine identity, Liron decides to exercise his manhood during the derby game. He's letting the green ape jump-out, sit on his shoulder and convince him that it is a good idea to do something bad.

Seeds Of Green Ape

In August 2006, at Anfield stadium in Liverpool England, I watched a football match between Maccabi Haifa and Liverpool FC while my big brother fought against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, on the Second Lebanon War. While he was trapped in a tank surrounded by RPG missiles flying around, I was standing in the stadium, surrounded by Maccabi Haifa`s fans. My right hand raised into the air roaring "W-A-R" while Maccabi fans shout from the opposite stands "h-a-i-f-a", and again came the roar "W-A-R".After the fifth time my hand slipped aside my body, my throat got dried and I fell into the chair while the rest of the crowd kept shouting. I tried to detach from the scene, but the dissonance beat me. For the first time in my life, the imagery world of Israeli football, the language that I speak, live, and breath, collapsed into  the bizarre Israeli reality, the reality of aggressive emotional detachment and destructive macho facade.

War?

The passionate moment left me overwhelmed with the crowd roars and bright colors. I decided to study filmmaking and tell a story about how it was for me to grow up  as a young man in Israel.

Green Ape is my graduation project in Minshar for Art film school.
