From Rome To Toronto con Amore
“Good Time for a Change” is a documentary narrating the adventures of a young Italian post-graduate, who works in Rome as a “precarious” and extremely underpaid white-collar worker due to the European economic crisis. Completely unsatisfied with his professional and personal life in Italy, he decides to make a radical change and to try his luck in North America, a place that he still envisions as a “New World”.
His emigrant gaze inevitably points to Canada, and more specifically to Toronto. In fact, this is the city where some of his relatives (whom he will eventually join) emigrated back in the 1950s.
Starting from the very beginning of his trip, the documentary’s protagonist will explore step by step the cultural, economic, political, and affective interconnections - and differences! - between Italy and Canada. He will do so through an eclectic set of interviews, personal experiences, and broader interactions with other older and recent Torontonian immigrants and residents.

“Good Time for a Change” will be of special interest for the Italian, Canadian, and Italian-Canadian audiences. It will be also appreciated by all those interested in a socio-cultural comparison between Europe and North America, and their complex historical and cultural interactions during almost a century of migratory experiences.
More broadly, we want our documentary to become a sort of “guide” to emigration in North America. In this sense, our visual narrative will realistically explore the many cultural implications and life changes entailed by this experience among an increasing amount of people.
Hopefully, our documentary will be of some help to all those who, in Italy as much as elsewhere, are considering emigration, especially to North America, as an actual way out from the hardships of the financial crisis.
