Welcome to our Indiegogo page!
Global Village Fruits is a for-profit social enterprise building international supply chains for undiscovered, underutilized superfruits.
We first discovered jackfruit when our founder, Annie, was working in southern India to adapt and implement a maternal and child healthcare program she, her brother, and a classmate co-founded.
It was love at first taste.
Annie had never tasted anything as delicious as the jackfruit. Unable to understand why she had never tasted this wonderfruit before, she delved into research and began attending jackfruit festivals, conversing with jackfruit experts, and visiting jackfruit farms and processing facilities.
Discovering that most of India's jackfruit is simply wasted for various gaps in the supply chains, Annie decided to launch Global Village Fruits to remedy multiple problems. Preventing jackfruit wastage would mean boosting the income of farmers and processors, empowering women with paid employment, and making this superfruit accessible in her homeland.
We did a Kickstarter campaign in February 2012. Those funds lifted us up and got us going! We set up an initial website and got barcoding, insurance, packaging, product, and shipping for a sample load of jackfruit products.
Since then, Annie has traveled to India two more times (with funding support from school) to really understand the issues.
Yep, Annie and the team are just as excited as ever (more excited is not possible) to bring jackfruit to your doorstep.
Building a Brand
We aim to be the enterprise to introduce jackfruit, in all its wonder, to the US, and we're building a brand that communicates our vibrant spirit and innovation as well as our commitment to positive social and environmental impact. Our new, fully printed stand-up pouches are at the press. We're re-doing our website.
Practically speaking, we've got a cash-flow problem. We expect to profit from sales over time, but we've got to buy our product inventory first. We don't have that kind of cash in the bank (although we definitely haven't paid ourselves for anything just yet--saving money for product and impact).
Which brings me to my next point--we've got a ton to do! Global Village Fruits isn't only buying, importing, packaging, marketing, and selling product. We're also conducting processing training programs and working to establish processing facilities in which we can ensure that we maximize our positive social and environmental impacts. (And we also don't yet have the cash in the bank for all of this, although we have done 12 training programs, and we know what equipment we need and where to get it.)
Another reason? I, Annie, am now working full-time on Global Village Fruits!!! :D!! Yep, first time in my 22 years of existence in memory that I'm not in school. I've finally got the opportunity to invest all the time and energy I have into realizing our team's dreams for Global Village Fruits. We will be fundraising in a big way (think angel investors and impact investors) after product hits shelves in August--but we need some help to get there.
Last reason--we believe that jackfruit is the next BIG thing. This is the beginning of our major social media campaign to tell the world about this superfruit. Spread the word--join and help us build the GVF jackfruit fan club.
We hope you're excited as we are to delight in the mango-pineapple-banana taste of jackfruit! Our premiere product is dried jackfruit, packed with potassium, magnesium, and fiber. (That's it on the right!)
But that's not all! We've also got jackfruit lassi, sweet jackfruit bars (you've got to pause for dessert sometimes), crispy jackfruit chips (a snacking favorite among our teammates in India), GVF T-shirts, GVF tote bags (100% organic!), a sample pack of yet-to-be-released exotic fruit products (o_O), an amazing India trip itinerary + travel tips, a Whole Foods dinner party in your honor, and the opportunity to adopt a jackfruit tree. (Read more on the column to your right!)
And then, for those of you who want to make an extremely tangible contribution to the development of this social enterprise, we've also got several [IMPACT] reward options. Your contribution would go directly toward the construction of a processing facility to support the livelihoods of farmers and processors, and we would send you photos of the equipment in action.
So, DON'T MISS OUT!
Thanks a ton for stopping by!
We really, really appreciate your support.
