*****NEW INFO: Through her twitter account, Daisy has asked that donations go to the KC Pet Project. Upon completion of this fundraiser (which I might just go ahead and end way early), all money collected here will go to them. Daisy said that she adopted her pit bull from this shelter and she is worried that they are struggling. You can donate in the link above or through here (although their site probably doesn't take a commission). Statement.
This is a simple fundraiser to help Daisy Coleman and her family.
In 2012, 14-year-old Daisy was drugged and raped while attending a party. The same happened to a 13-year-old friend who was accompanying her. After Daisy was callously dumped on her family's lawn in the early morning hours, her mother found her and called the hospital. Within hours, the two boys who raped Daisy and her friend, and a third boy who videotaped part of it, were arrested and charged with various felonies and misdemeanors. At that point, virtually everyone involved in the case thought it to be a sure thing, as the sheriff's office even had verbal confessions.
In the following weeks, as has become all too common lately, much of the town began to turn against the Coleman family. Members of the community began to victim-blame Daisy, her mother was fired due to the case, and eventually political pressure from Daisy's rapist's family caused the prosecutors to drop the charges.
Since this tragedy, the Coleman family has been struggling to adapt. They were virtually forced to move back to their previous city, their Maryville house was burned down under suspicious circumstances, and Daisy has only narrowly survived two suicide attempts.
The goal of this fundraiser is simple: to provide the family with aid to help them through this tragedy. Daisy has been in therapy since the rape and her brother is in college, undoubtedly causing bills to pile up faster than normal for their family. I ask that you consider donating in the hopes of making their burden easier and to show all three of them that there are a lot of people who care.
I will not be benefiting from this fundraiser at all. All money donated will be given to the Coleman family save for the percentage that indiegogo requires for payment. If you do not feel comfortable donating to a random fundraiser campaign (I understand), please consider giving to RAINN.
edit: I've removed the photo of Daisy due to copyright claims by an editor. Hopefully I'll have a picture provided from the family soon.
