We want to create Freedom Farmers Market, a Weekly Saturday Farmers Market in West Oakland!
We started a small farm stand on Wednesday, and now its time to take it to the next level.
Welcome to The Freedom Farmers Market
The Freedom Farmers Saturday Market will offer fresh produce and healthy food in West Oakland.
Through a partnership with Farms to Grow (a non profit highlighting and supporting black farmers' in Caliifornia) and Brothers Kitchen ( A local Oakland resturant, striving to offer affordable and healthy food to community members), our goal is to offer produce from Black owned farms to areas in Oakland in need of fresh produce and healthy food and highlight locally created goods and services.
West Oakland is commonly referred to as a food desert. The area is full of liquor stores and corner stores that stock pre packages and processed food. Whatever produce there is to find in these stores is either covered in pesticides or has traveled from far away and has less little nutritional value.
Often projects like this come from programs that offer charity to a community, instead this project is fueled by community members from West Oakland, designed by local volunteers to benefit local vendors and black farmers. All things that are being squashed by large corporations and big business this project supports, small farmers and local sovereignty of community food needs.
If you want to help in other ways, you can volunteer! You can come to our one of our weekly Wednesday Farm Stands from 2pm to 6pm. Come on down and enjoy tacos, a cooking class taught by a local chef, produce from black owned farms, or lunch from Brothers Kitchen! July 31st!
Who Are We?
Gail Myers, founder of Farms to Grow, and Ken Shandy, owner of Brothers Kitchen, have formed a natural partnership. Farm to Grow focuses on highlighting and supporting Black Farmers in the surround Bay Area. Ken operates Brother’s Kitchen as a local gathering spot in West Oakland and is actively-developing ways to bring more health to his personal life, his family, and his community.
Gail and Ken recently launched a weekly farm stand in the parking lot of Brothers Kitchen (3000 San Pablo @ Market St.) on Wednesdays from 2pm to 6pm. This is just the first phase of our meaningful initiative to bring local, fresh produce and healthy food to the local community surrounded by liquor stores.
How you can help!:
The next step is a weekly Saturday Farmers market highlighting local produce, local vendors, and cooking classes to help community members take the food home and create well-balanced meals for their families.
Aside from countless volunteer hours, it takes money to create an independent weekly farmers market. We believe in supporting our local community by building WITH our local community, we wanted to raise our funds with your support!
You can support this project! You can PRE ORDER your produce! Many of our rewards offer gift certificates to the market, gift baskets of fruit or produce and other offerings!
You can also visit, shop or volunteer at a farm stand or farmers market. We are currently open on Wednesdays from 2pm-6pm. We are having a big kick off with tacos from Hot Bike on July 31st! Sign up to volunteer or donate something to be raffled in July 31st!
Share this story with your friends on facebook, twitter or send them an email!
We will start this farmers market come hill or high water, and your donations, no matter the size, will help us get there!
If we exceed our goal, the extra funds will go towards the third phase of our initiative, which includes education programs for local community members and youth.
Please invite your friends to join in the celebration and to share this campaign far and wide!
