Fly Away Home
In celebration of Black History month, we present Fly Away Home: an original piece compiled and focused around the historic slave narratives. The narratives were collected by The Works Progress Administration from 1936-1938.They are autobiographical accounts of former slaves, taken word for word, allowing aged ex-slaves to describe what it felt like to be in bondage in the United States of America. So when we say it's based on a true story, we mean it.

At Eleventh Story Productions, we have a drive and passion for this kind of storytelling; the kind of stories that shed light on what is so often overlooked. In producing these stories, we also wish to support our community by creating job opportunities for whoever we can help. We believe that we can achieve together what we could never achieve alone.
Your support and contribution will go so much further than you can imagine. This piece chronicles an enormous part of American History, and through it you'll be helping to spread awareness about something that is more often than not overlooked. What's more, you will be helping those in need of a job opportunity. Ultimately, you will help a young company get on its feet, fulfilling our dreams and allowing us to give back to the community.
What We Need & What You Get
Our team has estimated that we will need approximately $20,000 to produce this project. In our best estimates, we've narrowed the numbers down to:
- Cast (20 actors): $4,500
- Crew: $4,000
- Marketing: $3,000
- Theater Rental: $5,000
- Lights/Set/Costumes/Props: $2,000
- Rehearsal Space: $1,500
If we don't reach our entire goal, we will be making cuts to people's paychecks.... and none of us want to do that. If we are able to make more than our goal, it would be our utmost pleasure to pay all those who volunteered their time to this project; they deserve it.
By contributing, you are eligible for a great list of perks! You can receive gifts ranging from the inspiring soundtrack of the show, tickets to our grand opening night, have your name recorded forevermore as a producer of Fly Away Home and much more!
We workshopped Fly Away Home as a student project during my last year of school and it was very well received. We got a lot of great feedback, and I am confident that this will now be an even better production. By contributing to this project, you will be helping to shed light on a subject that we are barely educated about, but is the basis of so much in this country.
I created Fly Away Home in response to the debate: are the effects of slavery still present today? The history of slavery is barely taught in our schools, and because of this, so much that is important to Black heritage in this country is lost. The psychological effects of slavery were far reaching, and its lasting effects are often dismissed and unacknowledged. It is important to us to do this show because the stories of all our ancestors deserve to be heard and truly understood. Only then are we able to learn from them and flourish.Maya Angelou once said "We cannot change the past, but we can change our attitude toward it. We can uproot guilt and plant forgiveness, tear out arrogance and seed humility, exchange love for hate." Nobody can change the past, but we can do something we should’ve done long ago. We can listen.
Other Ways You Can Help
If a financial contribution just isn’t possible for you right now, we understand. Thankfully, there are other ways you can help. We are always in search of volunteers who can offer their talents in any way. You can also always help by simply spreading the word. Take advantage of the sharing tools already set up by Indiegogo, it’s so easy!
This subject matter is very important to us, and we’d be immensely grateful for anything you can do to help us make it happen.
