Help us show the world that WE ALL can join in the fight against CANCER by raising awareness for ALL CANCERS by putting our gifts and talents to work!

Why are we doing this???

Justin Izlar, one of my greatest friends, passed 1/2/2012 from osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma, a form of sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults (1% of all adult cancers), but rather prevalent in children (about 15% of all childhood cancers). It is made up of many “subtypes” because it can arise from a variety of tissue structures (nerves, muscles, joints, bone, fat, blood vessels – collectively referred to as the body’s “connective tissues”).  Because these tissues are found everywhere in the body, Sarcomas can arise anywhere. The most frequent location is the limbs since this is where the majority of the body’s connective tissue resides. They are commonly hidden deep in the body, so sarcoma is often diagnosed when it has already become too large to expect a hope of being cured. Although a lot of the lumps and bumps we get are benign, it is very important to have them looked at by a doctor at an early stage in case it is sarcoma.

After going into the doctor to get a bump on his knee checked out, Justin discovered that he had this form of cancer. What’s difficult about sarcoma is that scientists do not fully understand what causes this cancer. During the 7 years of him battling cancer, Justin wrote several poems that told his story and revealed how he felt about what he was going through. Here is an example of one:

Fight of My Life (Round 6)

Yea I know your thinking “DAG, 6 times! Is he serious?”
That’s right, 6 time cancer survivor, but no I’m not furious.
It does tend to get frustrating and a little annoying at times.
But it also fuels the fire for writing and then I end up with more rhymes (lol)
I mean its not all bad, all the more reason to succeed.
So when I make it, make money, and have my own mouths to feed,
They’ll know they can do the same, no matter the odds
As long as they continue to live for the God of all gods.
That’s what I do, why I’m here, and why I still got a smile.
Yea it slowed up graduation, been in college for a while.
But I’ll keep grinding, keep pushing, and staying stress free.
So I don’t end up at GUH* in the building called CCC*.
Oh, I forgot they kicked me off. So I was in the Bles* building.
Got a little too old to be on the floor with all the children. (lol)
But it was cool, better bathroom, and better cable TV.
Besides, the nurses in both buildings liked my personality. (lol)
But I digress; I guess I should get back on the main topic,
While I still have your attention and your reading, don’t want you to stop it.
I’m just showing that through it all, it’s still good to be glad.
I met too many people and learned too much to walk around all mad.
So many people give me props saying they wouldn’t be able to make it.
They would have given up because they wouldn’t be able to take it.
But you don’t know the extent of your strength until you’re forced to show it.
I wasn’t sure I had it before but after all of this, I know it.

How can poetry help fight cancer???

After going through Justin's poetry, we noticed that these poems he wrote while fought cancer basically chronicled his struggle from beginning to end...from his diagnosis to his untimely passing. It is amazing to see how his writing tells a very fluid story of how he stayed strong and never gave up.

Justin believed that you shouldn’t leave this earth without leaving something behind that can potentially change someone's life for the better. In building awareness for sarcoma, and to honor Justin and those who have died from this disease, we at Christoph Writes are filming a 12 episode docu-series that takes the story told by Justin’s poems and brings them to life. We feel that this is the greatest way to share his life and allow it to be a testament that it is important to keep pressing forward no matter what or who drags you down or pulls you back.

Who is Justin Izlar???

(This is Justin’s story through his eyes. He called it, “The Fight of My life.”)

"I’ll be honest. The first time I discovered that I had cancer I cried hard, cause it was devastating. I cried eight times just on the way home, sometimes thinking I did something that God was hating.. The second time I got very mad, be cause now it was just frustrating. Why I gotta suffer when I tried to do right, but there’s others outside right now playing? During all of this, I began to have a reality check. I wasn’t being punished, but the devil knew God had a plan that hasn’t happened yet, so the third time it got a little funny, and I just laughed a little bit at Satan telling him that I’mma do God’s work regardless man, you need to stop hating.. I beat you up the first time, and I beat you bad the second. You would think that somebody would finally learn his lesson, but it’s obvious, since you’re still coming, that you’re not that clever. This time, I’m going for the knock out, cause I’m stronger than ever. If it’s a war with me that you really want to be in, we can go head to head. Because I know that as long as God is on my side, all of my enemies are already dead."
