Who We Are
When you think of Parkinson's, you might think of Michael J. Fox, or your grandpa who had “shaking hands” at family gatherings. But Parkinson’s is much more than a shaky hand. It steals your hopes, your dreams, and eventually, can claim your life. It can be an isolating, embarrassing condition, one which tells its victims they are too weak, too old, too frail to live a healthy life.
We’re changing that.
Rock Steady Boxing, Inc. was founded in 2006 to give people with Parkinson’s the power to fight back against their disease. What started with two friends grew to 10 people, grew to 25…. And today Rock Steady Boxing has established itself as the leader in therapeutic, high intensity exercise to combat the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s.
Non-contact boxing and Parkinson’s have the most unlikely marriage.
But it works.
We have seen the power Rock Steady has on our courageous fighters, who range from young working men and women in their 40s to grandparents in their 90s. We have seen our Rock Steady warriors climb out of their wheelchairs, put walking devices in the closet, and smile. Smile for the first time in years; smile because they know Parkinson’s disease has finally met its match with Rock Steady Boxing.
Rock Steady Boxing is completely non-contact. We use the fundamentals of a boxers workout which improves over-all strength, balance, agility, hand-eye-coordination, flexibility, muscle fire and mental focus. Our program is a hybrid between a boxers training regimen and other Parkinson's specific functional activities. Not to mention, our classes are fun!
Pete S., who has been fighting his Parkinson’s in our gym for 6 years, recently said, “Of all the pills I’ve taken, Rock Steady Boxing is the finest and most effective.”
We Need Your Help
But – we have run out of space. We cannot allow the unthinkable to happen – to ever turn anyone with Parkinson’s away from our gym because we do not have room for them. Where would they go?
We are relocating from a small, subleased gym into a facility 500% bigger. A gym that will not only increase the number of people fighting back against Parkinson’s in our own community, but will allow Rock Steady to reach out to the world with our inspiring and innovative method of defeating Parkinson’s, and spread the Rock Steady Method to every gym in the country.
Our new facility will be a center for people with Parkinson’s and the newly diagnosed, so when a neurologist hands down the devastating diagnoses, “You have Parkinson’s disease,” he can also say, “But there is a way to fight back. Here’s how.”
We need YOUR help.
We need $36,550 to transform our new space into the kind of place our fighters deserve. A place with handicapped accessible doors, a waiting lounge for care-partners, and disability-friendly exercise equipment. We need equipment like speed bag platforms, battle ropes, stationary bicycles and rowers. We need to refurbish our 20x20 foot boxing ring and make it accessible for people of all fitness levels.
Our goal has always been to never turn anyone away, regardless of age or physical ability. Our gym will be entirely ADA compliant and our boxers will feel comfortable working out in a facility that they know is safe for their specific needs.
A short video of our awesome new space is in the gallery section (click up at the top!).
