A few words about us – the originators

We are Kasia and Staś. We live in Warsaw, Poland. Graduates of the Design Faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts, we design things for everyday use. We strongly believe in “less is more”. This motto we follow in our personal life and in designing. We are active and value contacts with other people. We have invented and organized various actions—projects aimed at making people close to one another through contacts and interactions. These actions give rise to other ideas and subsequent projects. We believe that a message sent by a group of people is much stronger than a message sent by an individual.

What is MEME?

Meme is an idea, behavior and style, which spreads all over the world, making use of culture as a universal carrier. Meme action means a realization of ideas closely related to culture, creation of symbols or information that can be transmitted through writing, words, gestures or objects. Infecting people with ideas, interests and thoughts is extremely inspiring and motivating. It broadens horizons, directs life onto new paths, and with time imbues it with a new sense. The most fascinating aspect is that the inspiration is mutual. There are no “givers” and “takers”. Everybody benefits. Inspired people inspire others, and the circle broadens, person by person.

The aim of EXCHANGE MEMES project and why it is worth taking part in

A symbolic Thing, object or creation connected with your person, history, work or hobby is considered to be a manner of extra-verbal, and thus more universal communication. By exchanging Things we discover our passions and interests, and this stimulates contacts with people we do not know and promotes openness to another culture. In our everyday life we live far from one another, we know very little about one another. Owing to such initiatives we can become a community more open to the world and to others.

What is a Thing, what it should be like and what it should contain

A Thing is an object connected with you, your life, your precious memory, your dreams or your interests and profession. It must be an object you care about, one that evokes your emotions. The Thing should say something about you, maybe even for you.  Through it, you can give somebody a part of you, tell them who you are or infect them with your hobby. You offer your Thing to somebody, and you receive their Thing. You are a fashion designer—sew something. You are a musician—record your music. You have an unusual, priceless souvenir—offer it and share your past with somebody. You love one of your books—give it to somebody with a personal message.

About the Thing

The Thing should not be bigger than 20x20 or weight more than 1 kg. It also should contain your short description, explaining what it is and why it is important to you (max 80 words). Finally, take a photo of your face so that we can put it, together with your description, on the label attached to the wrapping of your Thing.

Why South America?

South America is quite different from our country and continent, not just in its nature, colors and hues, but also in the mentality of people, who are open, positive, spontaneous and smiling. We are fascinated by their culture, traditions and history. This is why we think South America is an ideal place for such a social project.

Who will participate in the project?

The participants will be South Americans we meet on our way from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Lima in Peru. We impose no age limits, so they may be young, aged and very old. They may live in large cities, small towns and villages. We believe they will be open, eager for new experiences, willing to meet new cultures and new people. We hope they will be willing to give a part of themselves  to another person and we believe we will be able to inspire them to such actions. Generally, we would like them to be somehow connected with the arts and crafts, with culture-related activities in the country they live in, which say something about their origins.

Choosing the participants

We will be choosing the participants in the duration of our South American project. We would like to try and meet as many people as possible, diversified as much as possible as to their age, social status, place they live in, profession, temperament and manner of communicating. We are open and ready to talk, so we hope we will succeed. We can be encouraged and inspired to an exchange by  a person, their smile, an object, some work, space, circumstances etc.

Wrapping and packing of Things

The Thing is to be packed in a 30x30cm vacuum bag, accompanied by a paper label printed with a photo showing your face, a short description of who you are, and what the Thing you give is. The bag is made of opaque, 180 micron thick AL laminate coated with matt aluminum foil. The vacuum wrapping gives the Thing a new expression. Deprived of color and graphics, the form and contour of the Thing becomes of primary, overriding importance. Such a closing of the Thing has a multiple meaning. It keeps and stores, but also hides the content, making the reception of the wrapped object more intense, mysterious and less obvious.

Blog: www.exchangememes.com

The blog will contain all information referring to the Exchanhe Memes Project. A detailed description and plan of the journey. Your photos, photos of your wrapped Things and their descriptions. Photos of the South Americans who receive and use your Things. You will be able to follow the progress of the project day by day.

Catalog (from 500$)

The catalog will contain all information on the entire project. It will present photographs of you and your Things accompanied by precise descriptions, and photographs and descriptions of these South Americans who become connected with you. Moreover, it will include a description of the entire expedition, photographs of people we meet and sites we visit, and a graphic presentation illustrating the Exchange Memes Project idea.
