ABOUT DWELL

Dwell
is a coming of age/drama short film that Brandon and Sarah started writing in December 2012. Now in pre-production, it is the biggest project they've ever undertaken, as well as the most important. It is not only the culmination of months of re-writes, thousands of emails and a few panic attacks, but it is their first independent short and their first real chance to achieve their dreams of having a film make it into the festival circuit.
As corny as it sounds, it's true.

The story surrounds a group of kids who come from various backgrounds of abusive parents, foster homes and abandonment. Despite their own personal hells, they've found each other and have grown to love each other. Dwell begins after the evacuation has already taken place, as each character struggles with their decision to stay. What makes a life worth living? Dwell is a short that explores themes of family and the complexities of the human will to live.

SYNOPSIS:

Lead by ADAM (25), a close group of friends from broken homes and abusive childhoods, BRIX (20), DEE (21), KAT (22), and BITS (15), have stayed behind in their recently evacuated hometown. Manipulated by Adam, they believe they are better off with the freedom to die together in a romantic, spiteful gesture against the people who hurt them than to follow the rest of the town like sheep onto the next place and continue to live in misery. As Adam’s personal terror of being left alone begins to unravel him, the rest of the group’s doubts about staying behind grow. When an evacuation OFFICER (37) finds them and attempts to escort them out of town, their fears come to a head as they almost lose Bits in the crossfire of a fight. They realize once and for all that they truly want to live. They want to survive for each other.

MEET THE CREW

BRANDON CALDER: DIRECTOR/COWRITER

Brandon grew up as most would call the "class clown”. Like many, Brandon had a particularly hard time with subjects like math, geography, science, you know... the extremely fun stuff. So, he spent his time entertaining the class, which landed him in detention more times than he could count. It wasn’t until he discovered film in Communications at Vanier College that he felt like he belonged. His first student short was called Worldwide Puke, a video that explored human interaction and racism. He remembers showing it to his mother; it was the first time he had ever seen her cry. It was then that he realized this was what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to be able to pull emotions from people, captivate people, to let people escape their problems for a moment. In 2011 Brandon wrote and directed his first music video for local artist Jess Abran. Not long after, he was invited to join sketch comedy group Moving Mind Studio. Since then they’ve built a great fan base with over 21,000 subscribers and over 7 million views on Youtube. They have recently signed to one of the biggest networks on Youtube, The Collective Digital Studio. With a return to drama, Dwell is Brandon’s first independent short film.

SARAH TRUDELLE: COWRITER/1ST AD/EDITOR

Sarah wrote her debut "film" in the 5th grade (a terrible horror flick called Ghost Craft) and was given her first video camera soon after. After doing two years of film class in high school, she was reaffirmed of exactly what she wanted to do: become a filmmaker. She completed Cinema, Video & Communications at Dawson College where she took two scriptwriting courses (with the wonderful Myriam Rafla) and was immediately enthralled by that particular medium and inspired to continue writing screenplays. She realized the aspect of filmmaking she was drawn to most was story telling through both writing and editing. After completing Film III in Communication Studies at Concordia Univerisity (a three year production course where students create films on 16mm), as well as taking another year of scriptwriting courses, she has one semester left before finishing her Bachelor's degree. Including Dwell, she has written six shorts, one feature and one TV pilot (also co-written with Brandon). She is currently doing a summer internship at Bis Films.

ROLAND CODY LAROCQUE: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Cody began in liberal arts at John Abbott college with the idea of becoming a photojournalist. However, after helping out on his first film set, he never looked back. Since 2009 he worked on many sets in the camera and electrical department, and in 2011-2012 he began his work as Director of Photography on music videos and short films. After completing Film III in Communication Studies at Concordia University, Cody was DOP for student projects while simultaneously gaining experience on professional sets. His latest film, directed by Mariane Laporte and entitled Beau comme dans les films (currently being submitted to festivals), is a hilarious, endearing, poignant and disjointed coming of age story about a 12 year old girl’s birthday party, playing with her child like yet adult fantasies using a beautiful nostalgic and naturalistic aesthetic, with just a hint of daydream. He was also DOP on the gorgeous music video for Home Is Where by local Montreal dreampop artists Diamond Bones, which was also funded by Indiegogo.

WHAT WE NEEDDwell Budget

  • 50% or 2500$ for Craft Service. We are feeding 18+ crew members and 6 cast members for 5-6 days. 2500$ is a low, hopeful estimate. We may need as much as 3500$. Our cast and crew are working for free, so we need to make sure we at least have delicious and healthy food to offer them.

  • 14% or 700$ for Art Direction. This includes all props and set decor which will be absolutely integral to our short.

  • 12% or 600$ for Costumes. This is an estimate for all 6 characters, including the costume for the evacuation officer which will eat up most of the costume budget.

  • 10% or 500$ for Make Up and Special FX Make Up. This includes all glamor make up supplies as well as the FX make up we'll be needing for a particular scene where somebody gets the bloody BLEEP kicked out of them. Blood, cuts, bruises, all that jazz.

  • 10% or 500$ for a Motel near Ormstown. We will be shooting about 45 min to an hour away from Montreal in a beautiful little town called Ormstown, filled with vast empty fields, farm land and great roads. We're shooting there for 2 days, so we will need to house our 24+ member cast and crew nearby.

  • 4% or 200$ for Gas. We will be traveling to and from Ormstown with multiple vehicles, as well as Laval, Lery, and Chateauguay where the other shooting days will be taking place. This is a very low estimate, the rest of the gas money will have to be found elsewhere.

Though the actual total we need is 10,000$ (the other 5,000$ is camera and lighting equipment), we decided to set our goal as half of that. We will be attempting to raise the other half by pitching our project for funding opportunities, and if that doesn't work, we will be going out of pocket. Obviously, if the whole budget can be funded through indiegogo, WELL THAT'S AMAZING!

WHAT YOU GET

  • For 10$: an HD digital download of the film.

While this perk is fairly self-explanatory, you'll be the first and one of the only people to see the film, besides if you come to the wrap party. This is because the film will be kept under wraps until festival submissions are over. SO THAT'S PRETTY EXCITING, NO?

You will also become a part of something great. Every little bit counts. 10$ is a meal for one of our crew members. It's spectacular. You are helping us create a film we hope will touch people and impact them if even in the smallest way. After all, that's what it's all about, right?

  • For 25$: + a PDF of the original 1st draft script, the final shooting script, and the storyboards

This perk is great because you get to see first hand where the script started and where it ended up, and all the fun differences in between. Also you'll enjoy the beautiful storyboard work, because we're getting a fantastic artist on board to draw them. Updates on that part soon ;)

  • For 60$: + a set of 4 high quality prints from the on set photography of Dwell.

Believe us, these are going to be gorgeous. Vincent Yip is fantastic: http://cargocollective.com/vincentyip

Let us know if you'd like signatures, and the whole cast and key crew will sign them. Frame 'em, or sell 'em on ebay when we're famous! :)

  • For 100$: + a ticket to our VIP wrap party/screening in November.

After the film is finished (estimated by the end of October), we're going to have a super awesome fun fantastic sweet wrap party with our cast and crew and screen our film for the first time. We'll be selling tickets to help pay for festival submission fees but YOU'LL GET IN FOR FREE! What's more exciting than watching a film for the first time (a film YOU helped get made) beside the people who poured their blood, sweat and tears into it? Plus, Brandon and Sarah are gonna buy you a drink. Or a shot. You should do a shot. Tequila?

  • For 200$: Sarah will write script coverage for you. For all of your scripts. Ever. IF YOU DONT WRITE: Sarah will write a 10 page screenpay STARRING YOU!

Are you a fellow scriptwriter? Do you have a project collecting dust 'cause you just can't seem to get your head around certain plot holes, or you're not sure what's missing? Do you maybe need help with dialogue or even just a good old fashioned proof read? Sarah will help you with whatever you need and write an extensive super helpful coverage for all of your scripts, and this perk does not expire. We promise, her notes are quite helpful. Just ask Brandon.

*OR: Are you a dreamer? Do you wish you could be a superhero or star in your own movie, because you're that awesome? Or maybe you're life is boring, and you'd like to see it spiced up so you can live vicariously through your very own character in a film? Then this perk is for you. After conducting a short interview with you, Sarah will make you the hero/heroine of your own short film.

You'll also receive the HD download, the scripts and storyboards, the prints and the VIP ticket.

  • For 300$: Brandon will write and record a song, JUST FOR YOU.

Who doesn't like having a song written for them? It's probably the most romantic thing ever. This will be totally original and all about you. All you have to do is send us a little info about yourself and you'll be dancing to the sweet sounds of a personalized hip hop song in no time. This is especially awesome if you're already a fan of Brandon's alter ego, IQ the Lights.

You'll also receive the HD download, the scripts and storyboards, the prints and the VIP ticket.

  • For 500$: Get a character named after you.

Out of our 5 main characters, one of them will now be named after you. Not only that, but it will be SAID at least one point in the film. How cool is that?

WAIT, THERE'S MORE! We're also going to shoot a personalized thank you video for you, featuring the entire cast and crew, where we tell you how incredible and beautiful you are. With maybe a surprise or two. It will be uploaded on our vimeo and you will also receive a download of it.

You'll also receive the HD download, the scripts and storyboards, the prints and the VIP ticket.

  • For 750$: Be featured in the film on the cover of a magazine.

Since the town is supposed to be empty and we can't have any extras, you'll appear in the film on the cover of a magazine that one of the characters looks at in the scene that takes place in a corner store. We'll need a high quality picture of you, any picture you'd like (within reason ;)) and then look out world, a star is born! Haven't you always wanted to be in a movie?!

  • For 1000$: Become the Executive Producer.

You'll be credited as the Executive Producer in our film and IMDB page. That's the big time. The cream of the crop. You'll be our savior, our knight in shining armor, our partner in crime, our HERO! You will be a hero for indie filmmakers everywhere.

WAIT, THERE'S MORE! We're also going to shoot a personalized thank you video for you, featuring the entire cast and crew, where we tell you how incredible and beautiful you are. With maybe a surprise or two. It will be uploaded on our vimeo and you will also receive a download of it.
