Bike Pittsburgh has been advocating for better streets for biking and walking since 2002. Just step outside and you'll see our growing community everywhere. In 2012, however, violence against bike riders was at the forefront of Pittsburgh news – particularly alarming was a rash of gruesome hit-and-runs, as well as the negative reactions to news articles posted on social media. The people behind the windshield and under the helmet are our nurses, carpenters, children, and sports heroes, but the overwhelming perspective seems to be that bike riders are in-the-way nuisances who have no right to the road.
Bike Pittsburgh loves ours neighbors – after all, we’re Pittsburghers ourselves – and believes the best way to address this problem is to remind them that bike riders are members of the community, people who deserve to get home safely.
For two months starting in August, 2013, we put up four billboards and fifteen bus shelter boards, and the response was phenomenal. People from around the world wrote to thank us for our message. Many asked us to borrow the images to promote their own communities' street safety. Pittsburgh also responded enthusiastically to the signs, but two months was too brief for the Steel City to really feel the benefits of the campaign. Help us continue and expand this program to stand up for our neighbors and save our friends.
STRETCH GOAL: $60,000:
$10,000= An additional professional photo shoot with media editing to include more images of real Pittsburghers who ride in the Drive With Care Campaign.
We're raising $50,000 to keep the campaign going and expand it: physical ads throughout the city, create a web campaign where more real people who ride bikes can share their stories, get the word out that all road users are people!
Your donation will directly reboot this campaign:
$10,000= 15 bus shelters for two months
$14,000= 45 bus cards (aka "Queens") on the sides of buses divided between four routes, for two months
$16,000 = Strategically placed billboards around Pittsburgh for two months
$10,000 = Web development and app creation for people to take their own pictures and make Drive With Care profiles
With this campaign we are no longer just preaching to our members, but taking our message directly to the drivers who are the hardest to reach. We aim for drivers to remember that they are operating a massive piece of machinery, be aware, and put away their phones. Together we will make sure our baristas, steel workers, clerks, and architects enjoy their commutes and Sunday rides.
