MY PURPOSE - I make Service Dog Vests for disabled veterans, free of charge.  Each vest is specially created for each veteran from their own service uniform.  The insignia, service patches, rank, unit, branch, name labels, etc, (from each member) is incorporated into their vest creating a unique one-of-a-kind vest.  Pockets are removed from the uniform and included on each vest.  The result is a wide array of configurations of vest designs, styles, and sizes each specifically created for that service member and his/her service dog.

When a dog wears a vest created from the service member's own uniform, the dog wears the pride each member has earned.  The dog and vest also take on the role of battle buddy which was so important while in action.

WHY - Our young service men and women have given so much, and even though they are home, many are still in the “battle” - the battle to reintegrate back into civilian life.  In many cases a Service Dog can assist in the support of the service member's reintegration.  A Dog Vest identifies the dog's purpose and mission.  A Service Dog is part of the support team, dressed in the service member's uniform. The vest is adorned with insignia, patches, and even medals earned during the warrior's service.

MY GOAL – is to keep up with the increased demand for these one-of-a-kind Service Dog Vests, at no charge for our Heroes.

WHO AM I - I retired two years ago after 25 years working as a Federal Government employee! I've worked for the Army, Navy, Airforce, Department of Justice and NASA. The last 15 years was spent in the law enforcement field.

HOW DID I GET HERE - About two years ago, I be-friended a woman who was running a non-profit organizaton called Hounds4Heroes Tampa Bay. She was taking homeless shelter dogs and training them to become service dogs able to assist military veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other “hidden disabilities.”

Thinking this was amazing, I volunteered to assist in some way......

Well, they needed vests and I happen to be able to sew!

One day, a soldier asked if I could make his service dog's vest from his military jacket and insignia/patches he had worn while serving his Country in Afghanistan . . . .

And, hence, my custom, one-of-a-kind service dog vest was born!

I started posting photos of these amazing dogs wearing their custom designed vests on my Facebook Page:

Word quickly got out. I now have soldiers contacting me from all over the United States. I encourage you to view my Facebook Page and see all the warriors and their four-legged companions that I have been honored to serve.

What's up Now - I started a website, DogVests4Vets, in August of this year. This website has helped me reach more veterans and improve the process of ordering a free vest. The website also serves as a journal, listing all my terrific heroes and their dogs sporting their new vests.

Over the last two years, I have had the honor of making dog vests for over a hundred deserving veterans and their dogs – FREE OF CHARGE. I have never charged a fee for my vests. I wanted to give back to my Heroes – they deserve it!

TODAY - Creating these one-of-a-kind vests has become my obsession! It is very rewarding providing this service to our veterans and their four legged companions.

Recently requests for my vests was increasing dramatically. The reality is I can no longer afford to continue making vests, free of charge, at this increased rate.

I started off making 2-3 vests per month

I am now making 3-4 vests per week!

WITH YOUR HELP - I can continue providing dog vest for vets "free of charge" to all our Heroes!

I now have a waiting list of Heroes wanting a vest for their service dog. I don't want to disappoint these warriors – but, I need your help with the funding.

What I Need & What You Get

WHAT I NEED – is to raise enough funding to supply vests to heroes for at least another year (or more).  That is at an average rate of 2-4 vests per week.  If I exceed our goal it will allow us to perhaps increase production or extend our timeframes.

Your funds will be used for:

  1. Fabric (for the soldiers that no longer have their military uniforms)

  2. Hardware (plastic buckles, slides, handles, D-rings)

  3. Webbing

  4. Velcro

  5. Patches

  6. Sewing Notions (thread, needles, etc.)

  7. Shipping Costs

  8. Labor (if I get enough funding, I would like to pay another seamstress to help increase production)

Some of the funds will have to be used to cover the costs of using this crowdfunding site, they include:

      1. Cost of “Perks” - your rewards for making a donation

      2. Fee to Indiegogo (9% if I don't meet my goal; 4% if I do meet my goal)

      3. Fee to process payments (3%)

WHAT YOU GET – They are called “perks” – I'm so excited about my new Logo. It was designed especially for my Heroes. In fact, the dog's name on my Logo is “Hero”. I had all my warriors help select his name on my FaceBook page.

So, all of my perks are made using my “Hero” logo. You will love it –

The Logo will be placed on stickers, stainless steel military dog tags, and embroidered patches and given to you for your contribution.

It is such a wonderful, rewarding feeling to give back to these amazing heroes. Your reward is a lot like my reward, with the addition of a few materialistic items of appreciation.
