Growing up in a heavily tech-based society, it is important that my generation does not lose sight of the important things, the beauty that is mankind, has to offer. This winter I am hopeful to experience what is behind the veil of what media and the American culture has led me to believe what happiness truly is.
I feel that increasingly so, this world has drifted from nature, and we see this as environmental disasters are not prevented or fixed, but rather swept under the rug for the next guy to clean up. Greed is ever more prevalent, where in 2008 the globe became hours away from financial crisis. Fatal illness is widespread, and unneccesarily so, as corporate entities inject our foods with synthesized materials that our bodies don't stand a chance in digesting. Enough is enough.
We need to get back to our roots. We need to step away from materialism, and instead walk towards community and enrich the basis of life and love.
On my three week journey, I am choosing to explore the region my mother was raised. She has encouraged me to explore my curiosity which has led to an incurable case of wanderlust. Western Culture is the only one I have come to know, and as an international business major, I find that it is essential to know firsthand why Eastern beliefs have not strayed too far from traditional practices and to take part in the origins of my geneology.
**During my travels, I will update those who are curious on my discoveries through a blog. Because I will hopefully be about to travel on the basis of donations, I will make it up to you to decide where 25% of funding will be further donated in each destination to a selection of non-profit organizations. This will be done via blog polling and with short descriptions of each.
San Francisco, CA, USA: This city is the mecca of what was and what will is to come. San Francisco was host to many leaders that generated progressive movements, molded leaders, such as Steve Jobs and Dr. Timothy Leary during the Vietnam War Era, and to this day is still the breeding ground for innovation. This destination will be a precursor of the region I will be occupying for the following two weeks or so.
Tokyo, Japan: I've been anticipating a visit to this nation for quite some time now. The economic blueprinting and development of Japan since World War II, from the help of American Dr. William Deming, has formed one of the most highly regarded economic structures still in existence today. I want to discover the culture of the Japanese people and become aquainted with the building blocks that have led Japan to success in the electronics and automotive industries, while also learning more about the environmental impacts of the nuclear bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the recent nuclear power plant explosion in Fukushima.
Manila, Philippines: This destination will be the most sentimental portion of the trip. Manila is the city my mother was raised and lived in until she was about my age. I am inquisitive to learn more about family history, and also tap into the sociocultural facets that made her the woman she is today. It is important to me to give back to the third-world country and the one that nurtured my mother, so I will make no exception but to volunteer my time with an organization of your choosing.
Bali, Indonesia: This location will be the last leg of my projected excursion. Indonesia is a land of ancient spiritualism and tradition. The purpose of visiting this land is to uncover the spiritual roots and effects on happiness when compared to Western ideals. Here I am hopeful to learn more about this country, not limited to the agricultural techniques of the Balinese rice terraces, and the architecture from the ancient people that remains standing today.
