They want it. You need to stop them.
Demon Core is a story-driven first-person survival action games for the PC and MAC, currently in development by the Finnish development team Apex Games Ltd. The game features an edgy female protagonist; a scientist forced to take up arms when everything falls apart and unique art style combining near-future high technology with exotic Russian design, filled with ornaments, decorations and elegance.
Everybody is making multiplayer shootouts nowadays. Nothing wrong with that, but what happened to the story driven shooters? The immersive experience that isn’t all about wicked sick kill streaks? We wanted to make Demon Core to bring back the story driven FPS with a bang!
Demon Core features innovative gameplay elements, allowing you to:
· Perceive the enemy chain of command and see real-world tactics and team dynamics that you can affect by targeting the right man at the right time.
· Identify the distinctive personality of each individual enemy, defining his behavior in combat.
· Hide in the shadows and blend in with victims, even pretend to surrender. Take an edge in combat and defeat the enemy by using your wits.
· Use your own or gathered weapons to set up traps. Take control of the trap, create your strategy, implement it and take out the remaining few enemies while they are disorganized.
· Immerse yourself in the game using Microsoft Kinect and NaturalPoint TrackIR to detect your head movement and reproduce it in-game.
At the heart of Demon Core is a multi-layered, hierarchical artificial intelligence. Within the AI system, character behavior is simulated on three levels: Team, Squad, and Individual.
Team level identifies and separates allies and enemies. In addition to enemy soldiers, the player can run into paramilitary groups that are formed by bodyguards and civilians. Depending on the situation, these groups can either join the player, or fight against both the player and the enemy soldiers.
Squad level simulates the squad’s objectives and co-operation, including breaking away from fighting positions, giving suppressive fire and performing flanking maneuvers. The squads have a commanding officer, whose loss can have an effect on squad dynamics. The commanding officers have their radio operators as well, who can call for backup if needed. Target the right people and the rest of the squad are at your mercy.
Individual level simulates the behavior of a single soldier, a subordinate of the squad leader. Every soldier is able to make his own decisions regarding which individual enemy they attack and who they consider the most serious threat. They choose their weapon and manage their ammo and other resources.
Soldiers with extreme personalities may even disregard the officer’s orders if his personality so dictates. The two extremes are the Coward and the Berserker who operate on different motives; a coward wants to play it safe and a Berserker is always looking for a good scrap.
The enemy squads follow a dynamic chain of command, which can be broken. Taking out the commanding officer can send a group of rookies fresh out of boot camp to disarray, whereas more experienced squads can still operate somewhat efficiently even without an officer.
Even if you take out the officer, some squads may be able to keep on fighting back. Sometimes, if there's an exceptionally strong personality amidst the squad members, the soldier can take over the squad and assume the role of the commanding officer, encouraging his fellow squad members to keep on fighting!
Drop down and feign death among casualties and enemies. Feigning death is only believable in certain scenarios; among bodies, on top of a blood pool etc. If you pretend to be the only dead body in otherwise a clean room, enemies come check you out. This can be used to lure them, but don’t expect to succeed every time!
While lying down, your aiming and movability are restricted. You can shoot, but do it after careful consideration, especially if there’s a whole squad of them right in front of you!
You can take the outfit and equipment of a defeated enemy and pretend to be one of them. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don’t. For example, you may think that wearing a gas mask hides your gender and that you are in fact a civilian (you are playing a female scientist, remember?), but if you are the only one in a room wearing a mask, that’s not very believable. However, when you do it right, you can sneak past the enemy, or even have some fun action right in the middle.
There are places where you can set up a trap. Picture a room with multiple entry points. You know that the place is soon going to be swarming with enemy soldiers. You have a couple of weapons to spare. Use them to set up the trap and hide!
Remotely control your trap by using your heads-up display or leave the trap in automatic mode. Either way, incoming enemies don’t know what just happened to them. Once it’s all over, use whatever you got to clear the last few of them.
A built-in feature of Demon Core is head movement tracking with NaturalPoint TrackIR and Microsoft Kinect. The game allows the player to use 6 Degrees-of-Freedom head tracking technology, which links the actual player’s movement in three-dimensional space to the in-game view. As you move in your chair and rotate your head small amounts, your game-view will precisely correspond. You never have to look away from the monitor because all aspects of your motion are amplified and adjustable. Mouse, keyboard or gamepad are now freed to do the things you’d expect your hands to be doing.
(We hope your Kinect experience isn't the like pictured above...)
Trying to solve the problem, scientific community all over the world has been seeking alternative sources of energy. Until now, they haven’t really succeeded. Russian government has been preparing an operation. They have come up with a very potential concept of ”gravitational force field” and have an army of top class scientists working on it. Energy production specialists around the world have understandably been extremely skeptical.
However, only one thing is given: nationalistic domain in Russia is very strictly against providing potentially useful information to foreign governments at any price imaginable, if any such information exists. They demand that any new technology and scientific expertise stays in the hands of Russia. This technology is Mother Russia’s honor, and it shall not be given away.
This ultra-nationalistic secret society has been growing lately. More and more powerful people are joining, while distrust in the international community is emerging. It is rumored that key people from the Duma and military may have joined. That even general Kondratiev, the legendary war hero himself, the man who many expect to once lead the nation, may have joined.
You, among other scientists, work in an underground laboratory, located at the same place where Tunguska Event took place in 1908. After the original Tunguska Event, anomalies were observed in the gravitational field around the site of explosion. The first successful step in recreating these circumstances has been taken. You, and your keen assistant Mishka, have had a key role in this research.
We’re still hard at work on the game and there is a lot left to be done. You can also show your support by spreading the word about us and our project! Let your friends know who we are and what we are doing and lead them to us! You can also give your thumbs up on Demon Core Greenlight page here!

We are a team of Finnish guys with a passion for gaming. Demon Core is our first project and we’ve set ourselves a goal of redefining the standards of an indie game. The development team consists of a handful of guys with various skills and backgrounds. But one thing brings them all together; a passion for gaming and making even better games.
Mikko has a strong background in project management, development projects and team leading. At his earlier employer (a certain Finnish mobile phone manufacturer that shall be left unnamed), Mikko has led large-scale software projects. He holds the threads and makes sure everything runs smoothly and gets done on time.
An experienced software architect, software designer and development expert, Sampsa takes care of the technological aspects and the software development of Demon Core. If there’s a bug in the game, Sampsa will kill it post-haste.
Being the art director, Petri is the one to thank for the unique art style of Demon Core. Having earned his spurs in culture, art and written work production, Petri brings his vision and enthusiasm to make the Demon Core experience even more refined. His background in the military, high-value target security and combat sports make him a valuable expert to the team.
Joonas has a passion for game design and he brings it to the table by designing a ton of beautiful environments and lighting effects. Having his background in web design and software programming, he’s a real multi-talent having skills in level and gameplay design, programming, texture art and modeling, among other things.
Having his background in software integration and being an experienced IT specialis, Jami decided to take on a whole new challenge by taking on game design. He designs game play, sounds and particle effects and works on whatever else he can.
Pauli is the brains behind the motion capture technologies utilized by our company, and our animator. With an extensive academic background in computer graphics, display design and game design, Pauli brings his expertise to the table by making sure the animations are as life-like as they can be.
A videogame enthusiast and a soon-to-be BBA graduate, Anssi has helped put the campaign together and on track. Having done his thesis on crowdfunding and how it works in the gaming industry, he’s picked up valuable information on the subject, which we’re going to put to good use.
Let's keep this show rocking and make Demon Core reality!
