While preparing for my first deployment to Iraq, many of my unit's veteran leaders were forced to accept early retirement or medical discharge. After returning to the U.S., more decided to leave rather than face another deployment and separation from their families. This left younger, less experienced soldiers like me to pick up the responsibilities of training without the mentorship and guidance of our veteran leaders. Our first range qualification resulted in only 28% of the unit's 350 soldiers qualifying on their individual weapons. We had motivated soldiers, but we didn't have enough leaders capable of training them.
With this in mind, I created the Deadeye Coach to give marksmen the data and feedback they need to fix fundamental flaws in their firing and to ensure that their next shot counts. Created as a way to help soldiers on the range, Deadeye Coach has evolved to address the needs of hunters in the field and law enforcement.
At 300 meters, a barrel deflection of less than one degree can be the difference between a clean kill and a two kilometer hike after a wounded animal. The science of marksmanship deals with targets hundreds of meters away, projectiles moving faster than sound, and weapon movements measured in millimeters. The average shooter, focused on her target, is not concerned with the fine points of marksmanship, she needs tools that can identify error and provide specific feedback that can be applied immediately.
Basic rifle marksmanship is based on four fundamentals:
- Steady Position
- Site Picture
- Breath Control
- Trigger Squeeze
With advances in sensor technology brought about by the wide spread use of smart phones, combined with expert knowledge of marksmanship and a large amount of innovation in data analysis, Deadeye Marksmanship is able to offer the quantitative data of high-end training devices with the expert analysis and feedback of an experienced coach in an inexpensive device that is durable enough for live fire.
Deadeye Coach is a small weapon mounted device that detects weapon movement in the fractions of a second prior to discharge. It is in these moments prior to firing when poor trigger squeeze and breath control can cause a deflection in the weapon's intended trajectory. The Deadeye Coach analyzes this data and transmits feedback wirelessly to your phone or mobile device.
Concise feedback can be viewed quickly on a shot-by-shot basis or viewed as a series, shot grouping, qualification event, or historical breakdown. Your shot data can be kept on your device, transmitted to your home computer, or shared with your friends via Facebook, Instagram, or text. Features will also include progress tracking, leader-boards, games, and anything else we can come up with to make the device more useful, functional, and fun.

We have three big milestones.
The first is to turn our advanced prototype into beta units. Beta testers will put these units through the ringer to ensure durability, to provide the feedback we need to build on the basic functionality of the mobile app, and to create an interface designed to meet the needs and wants of our customers.
Our second milestone sees the beta design advanced to production quality and includes:
- Final component list
- Machining and assembly files
- PCB schematics
- Mobile app release version 1.0
Production facilities contracting
- Component procurement
- Supply, storage and shipping logistics
- A big phone bill and a lot of sleepless nights
No contribution is too small, every step is one closer to realizing our goal, and no amount of funding will go unused. All contributors will receive acknowledgment on our product page and our heartfelt gratitude.
Perk levels include
- Decals, t-shirts, caps
- Lifetime premium membership and access to advanced analytics, social tools, games, and modes
- Access to our first production run
- Chance to become a beta tester, get a pre-production unit and see your input in the final product
- Be credited in the mobile app
- Special edition units
We have advanced our proof of concept into a working prototype. Now we are focused on:
- Finalizing the engineering and manufacturing schematics for the final product
- Improving the mobile app and data interpretation through iteration
- Developing data models for handgun users
- Package design
- Product certification
- Develop supply logistics
- Material procurement
We have been working on Deadeye for two years and we've come a long way, now we need your help. The leap to manufacturing is the last and highest hurdle in making Deadeye available to you and the millions of marksmen looking for a new approach to firing feedback.
So why should you support us now instead of waiting to pick it up at Walmart?
- Be the first to get one
- Support innovation in an industry that is often overlooked
- You want your phone to provide as much data about a weapon that can drop a 300 lbs deer at 400 meters as it does about what Kim Kardashian ate for lunch
If you have any questions about the coach, the team, have a request, or want to make a suggestion please let us know. You can contact us directly through the team links at the bottom of this page, through our website, Facebook or Twitter.
I'm a 6'7, 340 lbs man and I want a t-shirt. How do I let you know my size?
We're in Texas where that makes you a medium. Perks that require shipping will allow you to include any details or requests including size and color. If you forget, don't worry, we'll get in touch with you before we send them out.
Are shipping fees included?
Shipping within the United States is included for all perks. There will be additional shipping costs for international orders of the coach.
We will ship out t-shirts, caps and decals without additional cost as long as the shipping does not exceed the contribution level, but feel free to include international shipping costs with your contribution.
We do not anticipate customs restrictions limiting availability, but if shipment to your location proves impossible we will reimburse your order.
My team hunts a lot of snakes, but we never seem to hit any. Does Deadeye work with laser rifles?
Conrad "Duke" Hauser
Deadeye works with small to medium caliber rifles with picatinny rails or with barrel diameters less than one inch.
We are currently testing hardware durability on large caliber rifles and will update our hardware specs depending on results.
Does Deadeye work with handguns?
If your handgun has a picatinny rail that fits standard weapon lights then Deadeye will fit your weapon.
Our software development is currently focused on perfecting feedback algorithms for rifle marksmen. As time and funding become available we will be adapting those algorithms to meet the marksmanship requirements of handguns. We expect the additional software to be included as a free update to the Deadeye app shortly after release.
What are the challenges?
Deadeye is a completely new way of looking at marksmanship; the combination of technology and innovation is like nothing else on the market. While a great deal of diligence has gone into designing a great product, there may be manufacturing and production delays outside of our control. We are committed to creating a device that exceeds your expectations and promise timely and transparent communication throughout development and continued support well after Deadeye arrives at your door. Soon, Deadeye will be giving you the feedback to make every shot count.
